This past weekend, Children Worship Wonder & Welcome had the opportunity to represent Disciples Home Missions at the 225th Anniversary of the Cane Ridge Revival. Paraphrased from the closing sermon offered by our General Minister and President, Rev. Terri Hord Owens, 225 year ago our founders came together for a week of experiencing God with one another. They came to this place in 1801, excited, believing that “God is doing something extraordinary,” and trusting that “the Spirit empowers all of us to do that work.”
Saturday was an especially fun day, and moving place, to share the story of “Barton Stone at Cane Ridge,” seeing all the ways that Children Worship Wonder & Welcome lives out these ideals with children in the faith. We trust that the Spirit is speaking to all of God’s people (including children), not just a select portion. We trust an experience of God is more formative than just memorizing scripture or truths about God. Moreover, like Barton Stone, we celebrate that “God gives faith simply through hearing the Gospel.”
Thank you to the staff and volunteers of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society for organizing such a wonderful commemoration!
