Calvary Lutheran Church and School Indianapolis IN

Calvary Lutheran Church and School Indianapolis IN Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod Calvary Lutheran Church and School lives under the cross of Christ.

From the five crosses that hang in the heart of Calvary’s sanctuary, to those found on the walls of our Christian Day School, our members, students, families and staff are forever reminded that we are saved by Jesus’ death and resurrection, because God loves us. Empowered by that love of God in Christ Jesus, our mission is to Engage People In Christ through Connecting, Learning, Caring, and Serving.

Sermon by Kurt Ebert from our worship service on September 6, 2026.

Summary: Why do we love the hymns and songs of faith that we do? What is it about the hymn Holy, Holy, Holy that has made it beloved by many? How can a hymn about God’s holiness bring comfort to us, who must confess with Isaiah that we are unholy, unholy, unholy? Join us as we see the God who truly has revealed Himself to be merciful and mighty (v. 1, 4) … Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity (v. 3).

Sermon Text – Isaiah 6:1-8; Revelation 7:9-17
Series Title – In Hymn, For Him

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I thank you that you desire to get to know me. You do not come to me in your power and might. Instead, you reveal yourself to me in your Word as a beloved Father. Though you are the creator of the universe and the king of all creation, you rejoice to call me your child. Help me to marvel today over this amazing truth. Amen.

PRAYER: Jesus Christ, I must confess that I too often have given into temptation too easily. I have allowed myself at times to bank on your grace and excuse my sin, rather than persevere in what I know to be right and good. Forgive me for these times and renew my resolve to follow you, for I know that what you desire for me is for my good. Help me to trust this in every circumstance. I ask this in your holy name. Amen.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, grant to us this day the peace needed to approach life with the confidence of knowing that you are always with us. Remind me again and again of you promises that you will be with me to the very end of the age. Use the experiences of this day to deepen my love for you and stretch my abilities to serve others in your name. I ask this in the holy name of Jesus. Amen.

PRAYER: Lord, I thank you that you give us the bread of life. All around me people are looking for meaning, satisfaction, freedom, connection. But these are all aspects of deep spiritual hunger, and only your grace and your face can satisfy that. Keep me from their cosmic wild goose chases. Let me taste and see that you are good. Amen. (A Prayer by Timothy Keller)

Recording of this weekend's Contemporary worship service • September 6, 2026 at 10:30 AM.

Theme of the Day:
God calls us to be His holy people. Through the words of the prophet Isaiah and through his experience in God’s presence, the Lord reassures us that in love He forgives our sins and makes it possible for us to be holy in His sight. In the Hebrew language, that which is the holiest would be spoken of in the superlative as “holy, holy, holy.” And that is what our God is! Yet He knows us and cares for us individually. How amazing is that!

PRAYER: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God almighty, You are the one true God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Work through Your Church, through the preached word and administered sacraments, that many would be baptized and taught in Your holy name and by the Holy confess and worship You, the eternal Trinity; for You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and reign, one God, now and forever. Amen.

PRAYER: O Lord, be gracious and kind to all who are in trouble. Heal those who are sick, cheer those who are sad, and give your strength to those who are weary and weak, Do what is best for them according to your gracious will, and keep them faithful to our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. (From Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal, 137)
