January through June, Family Room served 131 babies as they entered new foster homes. When a foster parent gets the call, they often have just hours to prepare. A safe crib isn't something that can wait; it is a must from that very first night.

Foster parents shouldn't have to focus their energy on figuring out where to get a crib. Their energy should be focused on comforting a baby who is trying to fall asleep in a home that isn't theirs, with people they have never met, after one of the hardest days of their young life.

This Wishlist Wednesday, we're asking for crib donations. With the amount of babies that have already been served, our Resource Center is currently down to just 2 cribs!

We can accept new and gently used cribs that:
• Were manufactured in 2013 or later
• Are clean
• Have never been recalled
• Include all original parts and hardware
• Have no damage, including teeth marks or broken pieces

Your donated crib does more than provide a bed. It gives a frightened baby a safe place to sleep and allows a foster family to focus on what matters most, helping that child feel loved, safe, and cared for from the very first night.

It’s 7:30AM on a beautiful Saturday morning and I am thinking about the 8 children who just entered a new foster home and will be coming to Family Room this morning to be loved on and provided the things they. Thinking of the foster parents who said yes to caring for these precious children while they need it.
I am also thinking about the multiple VOLUNTEERS who are,at this moment, driving to Family Room to spend their entire morning serving those kids, greeting donors at the donation center, putting beds together, packing groceries and more.
I am thinking about the many moms, dads and grandparents who are currently packing up their cars with donations to take to Family Room so the shelves are ready with clean, quality, dignifying items so the kids who have to come into foster care have them when they need them.

I’m thinking about the volunteers of who are spending their morning driving around the city picking up grocery donations from other people who bought those groceries, and bringing them to Family Room so when kids come into foster care they have a variety of kid friendly, healthy food to eat.
Babies, kids and teens should not have to come into foster care - but they do, and the adults in their community should all help take care of them. Family Room only exists because of the community of people who make it happen.

This course will talk about the need for homes for LGBTQ+ youth and what you can do to be an affirming and safe place. The instructor will be Angela Weeks, the Director of the National SOGIE Center at the Institute for Innovation and Implementation. Under the Center, she directs the Center of Excellence for LGBTQ+ Behavioral Health Equity and the National Quality Improvement Center on Tailored Services, Placement Stability, and Permanency for LGBTQ2S Children and Youth in Foster Care.

This course covers the following topics:

🏳️‍🌈 Provide two theories as to why LGBTQ+ children and youth are significantly overrepresented in foster care.
🏳️‍🌈 Explain why LGBTQ+ youth are more likely to have a foster placement failure.

What happens to a baby when his parents have a physical altercation, putting him in the hospital and them in jail - and no family lives close?
He goes into foster care.

What happens to babies when they are physically assaulted by their parents, putting them in the hospital and parents in jail?
They end up in foster care.

What happens to siblings when one of their parents kills their other parent?
They end up in foster care.

What happens to siblings when dads in prison and mom is addicted to drugs to the point she forgets she has kids?
They end up in foster care.

Kids whose parents cannot take care of them are unable to care for themselves, and they need adults in their lives to step in and care for them.
To love them through the trauma, to show them that no matter what choices their families made, they are not the problem. They are still worthy of love. Still valued and important.

This foster care.
