Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Gospel: Matthew 1:1–16, 18–23

Summary:
Matthew traces Jesus’ family history through generations of faithful and imperfect people. He then explains that Mary conceived Jesus through the Holy Spirit. An angel assures Joseph not to be afraid and reveals that Jesus will save his people and be called Emmanuel—“God is with us.”

Faith takeaway:
God works through ordinary people, complicated histories, and unexpected circumstances. Today, remember that your life is also part of God’s plan, even when you cannot yet see how everything fits together.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Mary and for sending Jesus to be God with us. Help me trust Your plan, welcome Christ into my life, and follow Mary’s example of faithful love. Amen.

Monday of the Twenty-Third Week in Ordinary Time

Gospel: Luke 6:6–11

Summary:
The scribes and Pharisees watch Jesus closely, hoping to accuse him of healing on the Sabbath. Jesus asks whether the Sabbath should be used to do good or evil, to save life or destroy it. He then heals a man’s withered hand, placing compassion above rigid rulekeeping.

Faith takeaway:
Faith should never become an excuse to ignore someone’s suffering. Today, look for an opportunity to do something kind or helpful—even if it interrupts your plans.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, keep my heart from becoming rigid or judgmental. Help me recognize the needs of others and always choose compassion, healing, and love. Amen.

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel: Matthew 18:15–20

Summary:
Jesus teaches how to respond when someone sins against us. We should first speak privately and honestly with that person, seeking reconciliation instead of embarrassment or punishment. If necessary, others and the Church may help. Jesus also promises to be present whenever people gather in his name.

Faith takeaway:
When conflict arises, avoid gossiping or letting resentment grow. Speak directly, privately, and lovingly with the person involved, making reconciliation your goal.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, give me the humility to admit my faults and the courage to address conflict with love. Help me forgive others, seek reconciliation, and recognize Your presence among us. Amen.

✝️ Today’s Gospel Recap
Saturday, September 5, 2026
Luke 6:1–5 — “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.”

Jesus and His disciples are walking through a field on the Sabbath. Because they are hungry, the disciples pick some grain and eat it. The Pharisees immediately criticize them for doing what they consider unlawful work on the Sabbath.

Jesus responds by reminding them about David, who, when he and his companions were hungry, ate bread that normally was reserved for the priests. Jesus then makes the central point: “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath."

🙏 What Jesus is teaching us
Jesus isn't saying that the Sabbath or God's commandments don't matter. Rather, He challenges a way of practicing religion that becomes so focused on rules that it loses sight of mercy, human need, and the purpose behind God's law.

The Sabbath was given as a gift—a time for worship, rest, renewal, and a deeper relationship with God. Jesus reminds us that our religious practices should ultimately draw us closer to God and help us love others.

❤️ Thought for Today
Sometimes we can become very concerned about whether something is being done exactly right. Today's Gospel invites us to ask a deeper question:

Am I allowing my faith to make me more loving, merciful, and attentive to the needs of others?
Rules and traditions help guide our faith, but Christ must remain at the center.

**Lord Jesus, help me to keep You at the center of my faith. Give me a heart that respects Your commandments while never forgetting compassion and mercy. Help me recognize the needs of those around me and respond with love. Amen.**

Gospel: Luke 5:33–39

Summary:
When questioned about why his disciples do not fast like others, Jesus compares himself to a bridegroom whose presence brings joy. He then speaks about new cloth and new wine, teaching that the new life he offers cannot simply be added to old habits—it requires hearts ready to be renewed.

Faith takeaway:
Following Jesus means allowing him to change us, not merely fitting faith into our established routines. Today, identify one habit or attitude that may be keeping you from growing closer to Christ.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, renew my heart and make me open to the new life You offer. Help me release old habits, welcome Your grace, and follow You with joyful trust. Amen.

Gospel: Luke 5:1–11

Summary:
After Simon’s unsuccessful night of fishing, Jesus tells him to lower his nets again. Simon obeys despite his doubts and catches so many fish that the nets begin to tear. Jesus then calls Simon, James, and John to leave everything and become fishers of people.

Faith takeaway:
Past disappointments can make us reluctant to try again. Today, identify one area where you feel discouraged and take another faithful step, trusting Jesus to guide the outcome.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me trust Your direction even when I am tired or discouraged. Give me the courage to follow You and use my life to bring others closer to Your love. Amen.
