140 Years of Faithfulness
1886–2026

Our Roots in the Great Revival
The story of Cumberland Chapel reaches farther back than the country church that has stood in Wayne County for 140 years. Its spiritual roots can be traced to the Great Revival of the early 1800s, a powerful religious awakening that swept through Kentucky, Tennessee, and the American frontier.
On February 4, 1810, the Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized in the home of the Rev. Samuel McAdow in Dickson County, Tennessee. The movement carried the gospel into frontier communities where churches and ministers were greatly needed.
One of the early Cumberland Presbyterian ministers who carried this work into Illinois was the Rev. David W. McLin, remembered as one of the fathers of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. According to Cumberland Chapel’s historical records, his work in this region began in 1817 with the founding of a church at Seven Mile Prairie near Enfield. In 1819, he organized Village Church near Norris City. In 1823, he established Tom’s Prairie northeast of Fairfield—the parent church of what would eventually become Cumberland Chapel.

The new post on the Fellowship Hall look fantastic. We will be having a fish fry the end of September. This will be served after our regular church service. I will announce the date soon. Sunday school class is at 9:30 and church service is at 10.
