I don’t believe continuing to call myself a sinner after Jesus made me new is humility.

For me, humility is agreeing with God about who I am now.

Yes, I sinned. Yes, I had a past. Yes, I was completely lost without Him. But the cross didn’t just give me a better label while leaving me the same person underneath. Jesus dealt with sin, broke its power, and made me new.

That’s why I’m careful about the way I identify myself.

I’m not denying where I came from. I’m denying that my past still gets to define me.

2 Corinthians 5 says that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. It also says we become the righteousness of God in Him.

That doesn’t mean I never make mistakes. It doesn’t mean I’ve reached perfection. It means failure is no longer my identity.

There’s a huge difference between acknowledging that I can still miss it and identifying myself by the very thing Jesus died to free me from.

I want my language to agree with what Jesus accomplished.

Redeemed.

Made new.

Righteous in Christ.

A son.

Free.

That isn’t arrogance. Arrogance would be taking credit for any of it.

This is all because of Jesus.

At some point, we have to stop letting our feelings, our history, and even other people’s opinions speak louder than the Word of God.

My past can explain where I’ve been.

It does not get to tell me who I am.
