Our Shaloh House students are celebrating Sukkot with the whole neighborhood today!

Brighton Common is filled with music, dancing, pony rides, a giant inflatable obstacle course, and plenty of happy kids. We also have a moonwalk, BBQ, and a special raffle for children. It’s wonderful to share the holiday with families and neighbors who have joined us.

There’s still time to come celebrate with us! We’re here until 6 PM at Brighton Common, across the street from Shaloh House (29 Chestnut Hill Ave., Brighton). Everyone is welcome, and admission is free. Food and rides are available for purchase.

Our elementary school students spent the morning at Honey Pot Hill Orchards in Stow. 🍎

Each child had a bag to fill with apples. They rode through the orchard on a hayride, explored the maze, and stopped to see the pumpkins. Afterward, we visited Chabad Sudbury, where the Rabbi Yisroel Freeman spoke with the children and they had time to play ball and meet the chickens in the yard.

Then we headed back to Brighton, with bags of apples and plenty to talk about on the way home. What a lovely fall day together!

For us, Sukkot is a holiday children can experience with their whole selves.

Our school stays open during the holiday, giving students time to eat in the sukkah, say the blessing, and make its traditions their own.

They assembled lulav sets, learning how the different parts fit together and what makes a set beautiful and kosher. Then came the sukkah-building competition. Each group built and decorated a sukkah and used it to tell the story of one of the ushpizin, the traditional guests of Sukkot. One sukkah featured a tiny David facing Goliath. Another had a bowl of lentil soup to tell Jacob’s story.

The children put so much thought and creativity into their work that choosing one winner felt impossible. Everyone got popcorn and a Jewish-themed video in place of a lesson. Their reaction when they heard the news was wonderful.

There was more: making chocolate treats, walking through the neighborhood, and visiting teachers’ sukkahs, where sweets were waiting for them. Our preschoolers visited the sukkah at the school’s new house, too.

This is how a holiday becomes part of a child’s life: through stories, food, building things together, and the joy of being there.
