Strengthening the Assumptionist Mission of Care in Kenya 🇰🇪

The Augustinians of the Assumption (Assumptionists) have served communities across Africa for more than a century through evangelization, education, social action, and healthcare.

In Njiru, Nairobi, this mission continues through St. Monica Healthcare – Mwengenye, providing essential care especially to mothers, children, and families from financially vulnerable communities.

The facility is seeking support for critical medical equipment and infrastructure, including a portable ultrasound machine, digital blood pressure machines, a neonatal incubator/NBO machine, improved generator and electrical systems, and renovations to the clinical space.

Preserving the Assumptionist Story at Boston College

The Assumptionist story has found a new home at the Catholic Religious Archives at Boston College.

The Assumptionist Collection was the first collection placed and processed in the new 44,000-square-foot archival facility, where generations of Assumptionist history are being preserved for researchers and future generations.

For Father Rob Carbonneau, C.P., this collection also carries a personal meaning. A graduate of Assumption College, Class of 1973, he remembers the profound influence of Assumptionist professors such as Father Norman Meiklejohn, A.A., and Father Georges Bissonnette, A.A., whose teaching helped shape his vocation and his lifelong study of history.

Today, the archives bring to life the remarkable story of the Assumptionists—from ministries in New York and their international presence in Moscow, to the history of Assumption College, its rebuilding after the devastating 1953 tornado, and the lives and work of influential Assumptionists including Father Wilfrid Dufault, A.A., Father Georges Tavard, A.A., and Father Ernest Fortin, A.A.

More than a record of the past, this collection reflects the depth of the Assumptionists’ mission and their international and American experience. Preserved alongside the collections of many other Catholic religious communities, it will offer researchers an important window into the history of Catholicism, religious life, education, ministry, and the Church’s relationship with society.

As Father Rob reminds us, these archives are needed by the Church, by society, and by people of faith—preserving a history that continues to express the Gospel and connect generations.

We are grateful to Boston College and the Catholic Religious Archives for helping preserve the Assumptionist story and making it available for generations to come.

💛 Empowering Women Through Skills, Faith, and Opportunity in Kenya

The Augustinians of the Assumption in East Africa continue their commitment to social justice and women’s empowerment through practical skills that can create lasting opportunities.

Through the Intensive Basic Jewelry Classes in the “Punto Peruano” technique, renowned Peruvian jewelry designer Magally Juro, at the invitation of Dr. Magalie Torres-Rowe, taught women to create earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and rings. The classes and materials were provided free of charge, giving the women skills they can use from home to earn an income while caring for their families.

Last Sunday, after Mass at St. Monica Parish, the women proudly sold jewelry they had made using materials provided by Magally Juro—a beautiful first step toward turning their new skills into opportunity.

And now, that opportunity is growing. The students from both the Jewelry and Sewing classes have decided to establish the St. Monica Women Entrepreneurship Cooperative, led by Lay Assumptionist Nancy, along with Margaret, Nancy N., and Doris. Through this cooperative, the women hope to continue creating, working together, and building a more independent future for themselves and their families.

Inspired by Matthew 25:40, this is what missionary service is about: not only giving, but empowering; not only helping today, but creating opportunities for tomorrow.

🧵 Education & Empowerment Through Sewing in Njiru 🇰🇪

As part of the Assumptionists’ commitment to education and empowerment, the Assumptionist mission in Njiru organized an Intensive Basic Sewing Course to provide members of the local community with practical skills that can support greater independence and new opportunities.

From August 14–23, participants came together for six hands-on classes led by Sonia Palomino, a Peruvian fashion designer. Throughout the course, they learned basic sewing techniques and worked toward making their own blouses and children’s outfits.

The classes were held on August 14, 15, 17, 18, 22 and 23, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, at the old church of Njiru Parish. Fabric was provided, and participants committed to attending all six sessions to complete the training.

What began with fabric, thread and a willingness to learn became days filled with creativity, confidence and community. By the end of the program, participants walked away with practical knowledge they can continue to build upon and use in their everyday lives.

We are grateful to Sonia Palomino for sharing her time and expertise and to everyone who helped make this initiative possible.

Through programs like this, the Assumptionists continue to accompany communities through education, practical training and opportunities for empowerment. 🧵💙

🙏🏼 “Hail Mary, full of grace.” 💙

From August 12–17, the Assumption Family gathered in Lourdes, France, for the 153rd National Pilgrimage of the Assumption—days filled with prayer, fraternity, service, and encounter.

This year’s theme, “Hail Mary, full of grace,” invited us to look again at Mary’s response to God and to reflect on our own “yes” to His call. Following her example, pilgrims were invited to walk forward in faith and trust, even when the road ahead is not always clear.

Presided over by Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco, Archbishop of Algiers, the pilgrimage brought together pilgrims, religious, families, young people, volunteers, and those who are sick or living with disabilities for Masses, Marian processions, prayer, reflection, and moments of joyful fraternity.

As Assumptionists, Lourdes holds a special place in our history and mission. For more than 150 years, this pilgrimage has continued to bring people together at the feet of Our Lady, reminding us that our own “yes” to God can become a path of hope, service, and love for others.

May Mary, Our Lady of Lourdes, continue to guide us and teach us to say yes to God with faith and confidence. 🙏🏼💙.

🇫🇷🙏 The Assumption Family gathered once again in Lourdes!

From August 12–17, thousands of pilgrims came together in Lourdes, France, for the 153rd National Pilgrimage of the Assumption, a beautiful tradition at the heart of our Assumptionist family.

This year’s pilgrimage, presided over by Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco, Archbishop of Algiers, was centered on the words: “Hail Mary, full of grace.” Following Mary’s example, pilgrims were invited to reflect on their own “yes” to God and to walk forward in faith and trust.

Through the celebration of the Eucharist, prayer, processions, fellowship and service—especially to those who are sick, elderly or living with disabilities—the pilgrimage reminds us of what it means to live our faith together as one family.

As Assumptionists here in the United States, we rejoice with our brothers and sisters in Lourdes and give thanks for this beautiful witness of faith, service and communion.

At St. Monica Catholic Church in Njiru, Nairobi, a simple need in the catechism classroom became an opportunity to bring faith, education, and community together. ❤️🙏🏽

During her first Saturday teaching the children about the Liturgical Calendar, Assumptionist missionary volunteer Dr. Magalie Torres-Rowe noticed that the children had no tables and very few materials to use for their lessons. Some were taking notes on their laps or on the backs of the benches.

After sharing this need with friends, former students, and fellow missionaries, generosity quickly followed. Through their support, six new tables and school supplies were provided for the children. Each child also received a backpack with a rosary, notebook, pencils, a pen, and a small prayer book.

The children are now able to sit together, write, draw, color, and participate more fully in their catechism lessons. They are even learning the Our Father and Hail Mary in Spanish, bringing together faith, education, and cultures from across the world. 🌍

The celebration became even more special when Fr. Patrick Muomo, A.A., joined the children in song as they thanked the missionaries and everyone whose generosity made these gifts possible.

In the Assumptionist mission in Njiru, Nairobi, moments like these remind us that missionary work is often found in simple acts of service—giving children the tools, encouragement, and opportunities they need to learn and grow in faith.

What began with six tables became something much greater: a reminder to every child that their education matters, their faith matters, and their dreams matter.

“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.” — Matthew 9:37–38 🙏🏽🌍

Last year, Dr. Magalie Torres-Rowe traveled to Kenya as a missionary, where she spent time serving the community through Assumption High School, Youth Ministry, catechism for children, and the Parish Dispensary. 🇰🇪

Through that experience, she witnessed the beauty of faith, kindness, sharing, and service. Working alongside the children, young people, and local communities deeply inspired her and planted the idea of bringing more people together to experience the same spirit of mission.

Inspired by Matthew 9:37–38, Dr. Magalie initiated a new missionary trip, and today, fourteen missionaries are already in Kenya, volunteering their time, sharing their gifts, and supporting the missionary projects of the Augustinians of the Assumption. ❤️

The group has come together from Boston, Massachusetts; Orlando, Florida; New Jersey; New York; and Peru 🇵🇪, united by a common desire to serve.

What began with one missionary experience has now grown into a beautiful shared mission of fourteen volunteers serving alongside our communities in Kenya.

May God bless Dr. Magalie, each of these missionaries, the people they are serving, and everyone who helped make this mission possible.

The harvest is plentiful, and the workers have answered the call. 🇰🇪❤️🙏🏽

Today, we joyfully celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. 🙏💙

As Augustinians of the Assumption, this feast holds a special place in our hearts. Mary’s Assumption reminds us of the hope we have in God and the fullness of life to which we are all called.

May her example inspire us to live with faith, humility, and love—serving others through education, formation, care, and compassion.

Our Lady of the Assumption, pray for us. 🙏

From Missionaries in Congo to Service in Njiru: The Mission Continues

More than a century ago, the Augustinians of the Assumption began their missionary presence in Africa, arriving in Congo in 1921 with a commitment not only to evangelization, but also to education, health care, and service to local communities.

Today, that same missionary spirit continues in Njiru, Nairobi, where the Assumptionists serve through St. Monica Parish, the dispensary, and Blessed Pavel Catholic School.

During her time with the Assumptionist community in Kenya, Dr. Magalie Torres-Rowe was invited to speak with students at Blessed Pavel Catholic School about identity, leadership, values, education, and responsibility. Her message encouraged young people to recognize their gifts, develop their dreams, and use what they learn in service to others.

Mission is more than the buildings we establish. It lives through people—priests, religious, teachers, health workers, volunteers, and young people—who choose to educate, care, serve, and make a difference.

From Congo in 1921 to Njiru today, the mission continues. 🙏
