“All must therefore strive to ensure that on the day of redemption no one may be found in the sins of his former life.” St. Leo

“Be baptized in the fountain of life and wash away all your sins, so that, forsaking all wickedness and unrighteousness, you may live as a new man in temperance, justice, and holiness.” - Willibrord (658-739), Archbishop of Utrecht and Missionary to Frisia

Willibrord was born in Northumbria, in England. Willibrord trained as a missionary while studying in Ireland and began ministering to the Frisian people in Holland in 690. Willibrord and fellow missionaries established monasteries and Christian institutions, often under grave danger from pagan Frisian rulers. He is now considered an Apostle to the Netherlands.

Almighty and everlasting God, you called your servant Willibrord to preach the Gospel to the people of Frisia: Raise up in this and every land evangelists and heralds of your kingdom, that your Church may proclaim the unsearchable riches of our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word. And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel before the Lord, our maker and redeemer. (Anglican service book)

“We may go on speaking figuratively of honey, gold or wine—but whatever we say we cannot express the reality we are to receive. The name of that reality is God. But who will claim that in that one syllable we utter the full expanse of our heart’s desire? Therefore, whatever we say is necessarily less than the full truth. We must extend ourselves toward the measure of Christ so that when he comes he may fill us with his presence. Then we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” St. Augustine.
