You won't want to miss this! Our Birmingham chapter of Fraternus (with sponsorship also from Hoar Construction) is bringing the famous band of Dominican friars, The Hillbilly Thomists, to town this August 6! In addition, the popular and more local bluegrass band, Cipollari (formerly Cotton Pickin Kids), will make a guest appearance. This family concert is open to all and will be a lot of fun! To ensure that as many as possible from our local Catholic community – including clergy, religious, and lay people – can take part, Fraternus has rented the historic Lyric Theatre as the venue, just three blocks from the Cathedral! Tickets are on sale now: visit https://www.ticketmaster.com/event/200064C6A63D1868 to get yours, before they sell out!

It takes a lot to keep our downtown campus beautiful, and we’re always working hard in that regard. One of our most recently completed maintenance projects was to have our benches repaired and renewed. Some needed new timber; all needed sanding and painting. These benches have served us well for many years!

NEW OCIA COORDINATOR
Starting in July, we will have a new OCIA Coordinator at the Cathedral. Our parishioner, Ms. Cindy Durham, is graciously stepping into this role following the departure of Fox Garon for seminary formation. Cindy has been involved in RCIA/OCIA for many years – both here at the Cathedral and in her previous parish in another state. She is also a member of the Lay Dominicans, of which we have a very active chapter in Birmingham. Cindy is passionate about helping all those who seek to learn more about the Catholic faith and accompanying them through whatever process is best-suited for them. Herself a volunteer, Cindy is building a team of volunteers to ensure that the Cathedral’s OCIA program continues to be a place of hospitality and welcome, and to ensure that we respond in a timely manner to the numerous inquiries we receive. If you feel led to be of assistance, contact Cindy for more information at [email protected]. Thank you, Cindy!

Another successful ‘Catholic Kids Week’! We had wonderful participation this year and everyone enjoyed the final pizza party today. Here the children are shown singing the songs they learned, led by Mrs. Erin Ludwick. Many thanks to our PSR Coordinator, Mrs. Margaret Masny, and the MANY adult and teenager volunteers for a great week!

In time for the Consecration of the Nation to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, which the US Bishops will undertake tomorrow and of which we will have a diocesan and parish commemoration, patriotic bunting has been installed on the Cathedral Rectory. At Masses this weekend, we will join in reciting the consecration prayer, too — before the final blessing. We pray that the Lord who has willed for us to live in this time may hear our humble prayers for blessings, protection, and renewal on our land: “America! America! / God mend thine ev’ry flaw, / Confirm thy soul in self-control, / Thy liberty in law.” Amen. 🇺🇸

NEW SEMINARIAN FROM CATHEDRAL PARISH
Congratulations to one of our Cathedral employees, Fox Garon, who has been accepted as a seminarian for the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama! Bishop Raica plans to send Fox to St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana beginning this August. Originally from southeastern Louisiana, Fox came to know and love Birmingham while studying at Samford University. During his time there, he converted to the Catholic faith and became active in Campus Ministry, the local young adult community, and Cathedral parish life. For about the past year, Fox has served as the Cathedral’s Faith Formation Coordinator, overseeing our OCIA program, leading our Youth Group, and coordinating Sunday adult education. He has also been a sacristan for daily Mass, a lector, and an altar server. While we are sad to see him leave the staff (his last day will be July 10), we could not be prouder of him for generously answering God’s call and submitting his discernment to the Church. As with all our seminarians, our hope is simply that they do God’s will. We send Fox with our prayers, blessing, and support, confident that the Lord will guide him wherever he is calling. Thank you, Fox, for your faithful service to our parish, and Godspeed on the road ahead!

Today, June 7, Father Jerabek gives thanks to God for his 18th anniversary of priestly ordination, the last almost-ten years of which have been at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Although he is on summer vacation at present, he is offering his Sunday Mass, as always, for the People of the Parish, and remembering besides the countless people who have supported him in his vocation and assisted him by their prayers. He is united with everyone in the Most Holy Eucharist, which we honor in a particular way this Sunday with the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, as well as in the parish novena in preparation for the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, which we will all celebrate together as a parish and as a diocese next Sunday, June 14. Going through various photos and memories, this photo from the Our Lady of Czestochowa chapel in the Vatican Grottoes seemed fitting: Our Lady is with us always to help us to persevere, to have courage, to have hope – and to help us through all our trials. She helps us to stay united with her Son and with his Church. With her, we give thanks to God always, and especially at special times and milestones, joining our voices with hers: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior...".

FIRST SUNDAY ORGAN TOUR

As we celebrate Corpus Christi this Sunday, June 7, don't forget that we also have our monthly first Sunday organ tour after the 11:00 a.m. Mass! The Anna Catharine Grace Memorial Pipe Organ is one of the more notable pipe organ installations in North America in the last decade, and we are coming up on our 5th anniversary this December 8th!

This interactive tour is a wonderful opportunity to see a work of art with links to the great churches of France as well as to our Alabama community. Simply come upstairs during the closing voluntary and we will get started! See you then!
