A Prayer and Blessing For Those In Authority
In honor of the National Day of Prayer
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” 1 Timothy 2:1-2
Father, we come before You in humility and thanksgiving. You are holy, righteous, sovereign, and good. You rule over all nations, all leaders, all times, and all generations. No authority is beyond Your sight, and no leader is outside the reach of Your hand.
Your Word calls us first of all to pray. To bring petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving for all people and for those in authority. So in honor of the National Day of Prayer, we answer that call. We lift before You those who lead in government, churches, families, schools, businesses, ministries, communities, and every place of influence.
Lord, You desire righteous men and women to lead. We ask You to raise up leaders who are God-molded and God-directed. Shape them by Your wisdom, Your truth, and Your holy fear. Give them righteousness and blamelessness like Noah (Genesis 6:9), faith like Abraham (Romans 4:18-21), wisdom like Joseph (Genesis 41:33), meekness like Moses (Numbers 12:3, 7-8), and the fear of the Lord and trustworthiness like the leaders Moses chose (Exodus 18:21).
Raise up leaders who know they are sent by You, like Miriam (Micah 6:4), who move in Spirit-led authority like Deborah (Judges 4:4-10; Judges 5:7), who walk in courage like Joshua (Deuteronomy 31:6), who follow You wholeheartedly like Caleb (Joshua 14:8-9, 14), and who obey courageously like Esther (Esther 4:14-16).
Give them hearts of intercession like Samuel (1 Samuel 12:23), perseverance like Job (James 5:11), capability like Ezra’s leaders (Ezra 7:28; 8:16-18), and prayer lives like Nehemiah, so that Your gracious hand may rest on their leadership (Nehemiah 1:4-11; 4:4, 9; 6:9, 14).
Give them integrity like Daniel (Daniel 1:8), servant hearts like Mary (Luke 1:38), submission under Your authority like the centurion (Matthew 8:9), insight instead of blindness (Matthew 23:16; 15:14), honesty like Nathanael (John 1:47), bold witness like Mary Magdalene (John 20:11-18), and genuine concern for the welfare of others like Timothy (Philippians 2:20).
Let their leadership bear witness that they have been with Jesus, like Peter and John (Acts 4:13). Fill them with faith, grace, power, and the Holy Spirit, like Stephen (Acts 6:5, 8, 10). Give them certainty of Your choosing and commissioning like Paul (Acts 9:15-16; 26:16-20).
We bless those in authority with Christ-like leadership. May they lead with a shepherd’s heart like our Shepherd (Jeremiah 3:15; 23:1, 4; Hebrews 13:20-21). May they walk in purity of heart (Matthew 5:8), total grace and truth (John 1:14, 16), complete obedience (Philippians 2:5-8), humble submission to the Father (Mark 14:36), willingness to suffer for righteousness (Hebrews 5:8), and compassion for those who are harassed and helpless (Matthew 9:36).
Jesus, You perfectly exemplify every righteous leadership quality. You are the Servant King, the Good Shepherd, the faithful Witness, the righteous Judge, and the One who rules with justice and mercy. We ask You to shape leaders, both spiritual and secular, to grow in the qualities that reflect Your heart.
Lord, begin with us. Make us faithful to pray rather than complain (1 Timothy 2:1-2), to intercede rather than despair (1 Samuel 12:23), and to bless rather than curse (Romans 12:14). Guard our hearts from cynicism (Proverbs 4:23), fear (2 Timothy 1:7), and anger (James 1:19-20). Teach us to stand in the gap (Ezekiel 22:30) with clean hands, pure hearts (Psalm 24:3-4), and confident hope in You (Hebrews 10:23).
Bless those in authority to be strengthened to lead in ways that allow people to live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness (1 Timothy 2:1-2). May righteousness increase (Proverbs 14:34). May truth be honored (Zechariah 8:16). May justice be established (Amos 5:24). May mercy be shown (Micah 6:8). May Your kingdom come and Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10).
We bless our leaders in the name of Jesus. We bless them to hear Your voice, yield to Your Spirit, walk in Your wisdom, and fulfill Your purposes in their generation (Colossians 1:9-10).
Teach them what You require: to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with You (Micah 6:8). Give them courage to choose what is right, compassion to care for those they serve, humility to recognize their dependence on You, and wisdom that is pure, peace-loving, considerate, full of mercy, and bearing good fruit (James 3:17).
May their decisions reflect truth, righteousness, mercy, and justice. May they shepherd with integrity of heart and lead with skillful hands (Psalm 78:72). May they be strengthened by Your hand, guided by Your Spirit, and held accountable to Your holy purposes.
Amen.
