On Sunday our second graders celebrated their First Holy Communion! It was a beautiful morning at St. Thomas. Thank you so much to our catechists, Ashleigh Elmore and Tina Disselkamp for teaching this year and for helping with the rehearsals. We are grateful to our hospitality committee, especially Karen Willett who organized the reception for our children and their families. Thank you to Fr. Steven, Deacon Scott, and the choir for leading us in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, which is the greatest gift of love we can ever receive in this world!

Special thanks to Sandy Lyvers Photography for capturing this special moment for our children and their parents!

Last Saturday our second graders participated in a First Reconciliation retreat! We spent the day together at St. Thomas. In the morning we meditated on the gifts of our baptism, the Last Supper, and the gestures and prayers of the Mass. We played games and ate lunch outside. In the afternoon we made our very own candles from 100% beeswax. We concluded the retreat by receiving the Sacrament of First Reconcilaition and renewing our baptismal promises with our parents. We had a special celebration with the light and white garment, which was first given to us by Christ at our baptism and is now renewed in a particular way through our acceptance of the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Eucharist. Thank you to our catechists and volunteers who helped make this a joyful day for our children! Alleluia!

We wanted to recognize one of our youth group students, Barry Branham who received the 2024 Altar Server Certificate from the Saint Serra Club of Louisville. The certificate is in appreciation for his continuing service to St. Thomas by assisting in the celebration of the Eucharist.

The Serra Club of Louisville is one of over 300 clubs in the USA Council of Serra International and its mission is to foster vocations to the priesthood and religious life by prayer and activities which support vocations.

Thank you Barry for your inspiring love and commitment to the Holy Eucharist and our community!

Due to positive feedback and the many requests to see it again, the 4th/5th grade class will perform Mary’s Way of the Cross once more this Lent on Friday, March 22nd at 6:30 p.m. in St. Teresa Hall. All are welcome as we meditate for 30 minutes on the Stations of the Cross through Mary’s eyes! You won’t want to miss this unique experience! All are welcome!

*This will replace the regularly scheduled Stations of the Cross in the Historical Church that evening.*

We want to recognize one of our Faith Formation students, Natalie Leake for coming in third place in the Serra Club of Louisville and Archdiocese of Louisville 2023 Vocation Awareness Poster Contest!

The Serra Club is an international organization of lay persons whose mission is to foster and affirm vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and to encourage its members to fulfill their own Christian vocations to service. The Serra Club of Louisville was organized in 1955.

The poster contest is open to all students in grades 4, 5, 6 who live in or attend school within the Archdiocese of Louisville, or who are participating in religious education or youth ministry classes.

All submitted posters are viewed and judged by a committee selected by the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Vocations Office. Posters are judged on originality, creativity, eye appeal and the overall effectiveness of the design and message.

Along with her certificate, Natalie was awarded $50 from the Vocations Office.

Congratulations, Natalie and thank you for representing St. Thomas Church!

We had our first ever performance of the Stations of the Cross on Sunday before the 11:00 AM Mass! The 4th/5th grade class did a wonderful job conveying the stations through the use of shadows as we meditated on the mystery of the cross through Mary’s perspective. Thank you so much to our incredible volunteers, including our catechists Jessica Leake and Diana Gagné and Wayne and Cheryl Ritchie who designed all of our props for the play!

Last Sunday the parents and children in the Faith Formation of Families collected items for the residents at Cooper Trail Senior Living. They wrapped gifts and wrote letters to the residents together. This Sunday our Confirmation class hand delivered those gifts to the residents at Cooper Trail. The students had a blast spending time with the residents and hearing their stories. The residents also were very grateful to recieve gifts, but most especially to receive visitors. Thank you to our St. Thomas families for being so gracious with their time and resources as we worked together to bless others this holiday season. Special thanks to Karen for organzing a breakfast for our families last Sunday and for Savannah and Beth at Cooper Trail for assisting us with our visit there!

We had a blast at our first Family Fall Festival! We gave thanks for our many blessings and enjoyed games, crafts, face painting, prizes, food, and fellowship! We even had a surprise hay ride for the children! Thank you to all of our adult volunteers who made this event possible for our St. Thomas families, including and most especially Diana Gagné and Jessica Leake!

Our new formation class had a great Confirmation retreat at the Abbey of Gethsemani today! We had opportunities for prayer, team building, fellowship, and hiking. Thank you, Brother Luke for being such a generous host! He shared his faith with us and offered a tour and history lesson about the Trappist Monks in Kentucky. A new generation is being raised in the Church; from the roots of Catholicism in this region, at the oldest monastery in America. Praise be to God! Please pray for our candidates as they continue to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

We have been busy this summer as we prepare for the new school year to begin on Sunday! A huge thank you to Wayne Ritchie for assisting Olivia Seeger with one of several projects. One project they recently completed was the City of Jerusalem for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level I Atrium. This geography material will teach 3-6 year old children about Jesus' last steps on earth as they meditate on the Paschal Mystery and reconstruct the places Jesus visited before his death and resurrection.
