All members of the Emory community are invited to join in the celebration of Buddha’s life and teachings with Emory’s Buddhist and interfaith communities. Popularly known as Buddha Jayanti Vesak/Vaisakhi/Visakha Full Moon Day, this holidaycommemorates the birth, enlightenment, and final passing of the Buddha. We will celebrate this occasion with traditional Buddhist chanting, Dharma reflections, and a communal vegetarian meal.

Join the University Chaplaincy and Office of Sustainability Initiatives of MindfulEmory for a contemplative retreat for students. The retreat will offer time to slow down, build community, and support resilience through yoga, a sound bath, meditation, journaling, mindful eating, bonsai workshop, and gentle group practices. It is free and open to all Emory University students. A vegetarian lunch will be provided.

Reconnecting with Our Hearts: Science, Technology, and Literature

Join us for a book talk with S.K. Oshi as he discusses his debut book Departure. This science fiction novel tells the story of Amina, a young woman who dreams of going on a sacred journey to explore the stars. But her dream is challenged when a chance encounter uncovers dark truths about her most closely held beliefs. Follow Amina’s trials and adventures as she navigates the demands of family, friendship, love, betrayal and the ruthless competition to earn a spot on the next interstellar mission.

S.K. Oshi is an author of science fiction who enjoys writing stories about human values and beliefs in faraway worlds. As professional futurist and technologist, he enjoys building worlds where alternative technologies, political structures, and complex characters get entangled in unique ways and create settings for timeless human struggles: belonging, identity, love, justice, and faith. Lunch and Learn: Dharma and Ecological Justice
Thursday, March 19, Noon, Brooks Commons, Cannon Chapel

This collaborative event will explore the intersections of Dharmic faith traditions, the living environment, and the law. Drawing on Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist concepts of non-dualism, nonviolence, and the living world, the event will bring them into conversation with legal perspectives on interest convergence, rights, and personhood. Featuring scholars of both religion and law, both visiting and from Emory, the event will highlight distinct ethical frameworks within each tradition and apply them to the contemporary discourse on environmental justice, animal welfare, and sustainability.
