Candler Worship

Candler Worship Office of Worship at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, Ga.

At Candler, worship follows the natural rhythm of our daily lives, bringing together students, faculty, staff and the greater Emory community to commune with God and one another. The Office of Worship (OOW) offers this page as a way for members of the Candler community to engage in worship as we gather to hear the Word and come to the Table together. This page provides an opportunity to be informed of ways to respond in faith and service.

Candler Worship is on the road this week. Dean Williams is at the Presbyterian Association of Musicians Worship and Music Conference, where she is bringing the Sacred Arts Collective and leading her class, God Through the Lens, a photography workshop.

Meanwhile, I am at Montreat Conference Center in North Carolina, joining a community rooted in worship, learning, and renewal. Grateful for the many ways Candler continues to engage the church and beyond through creativity, formation, and faithful presence.

Not sure if Rachal is enjoying our little mini retreat outside in the garden 😂 but we love that she stopped to pause with us. We hope that you’re also stopping to pause and be still this summer, too!

Summer may be here, but preparation for worship this fall never stops. We’re praying, planning, and making sure everything is ready for what God has in store for Candler worship.

Summer invites a slower pace and a deeper connection with God. 🌿

Here are 3 simple spiritual practices to try at home this season:

1. Set a 2 hour timer and step away
Put your phone in a different room and allow yourself space to be present, undistracted, and attentive to God.

2. Spend time in silence and gratitude
Pause, breathe, and reflect. Name what you are thankful for and rest in God’s presence.

3. Walk outside and be refreshed
Take a walk in nature and let creation remind you of God’s goodness, beauty, and peace.

Wherever this summer finds you, may it be a season of renewal, rest, and deeper formation. ✨

Sometimes the most sacred thing you can do is be still.

We spent some time in ’s Living Mandala Garden with our Associate Dean, Rev. Dr. Khalia J. Williams, and the words of Jan Richardson’s Blessing of the Ordinary.

We hope it finds you where you are.

Throwing it back to a moment when we were able to pause and rest with Candler alum . We may be biased, but we truly have the best alumni.

“Notes of Rest invites the weary into the rest of God, as practiced in the Bible and Black music.”

We’re grateful for the opportunity to engage in various spiritual disciplines (“notes”) as we continue discerning what it means to participate in true rest and unity with God.

Remember, rest is worship.

No matter where we are on our journey, we are never alone. God steadies our steps and holds us through every challenge. As we reflect on the semester behind us and look forward to the summer ahead, let us trust in this divine guidance and care.
