Matthew 5:8 ESV
[8] “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Our hearts can be so deceptive. In fact Paul puts it this way
Romans 3:10-12 ESV
[10] as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; [11] no one understands; no one seeks for God. [12] All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

Having a pure heart, seeking God alone, requires having an honest look at our heart. What are we admiring? What are we treasuring? What are we saying out of our mouths? Where is our money going?
David knew he needed to seek God's help and his heart needed purified.

Psalm 51:1-12 ESV
[1] Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. [2] Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! [3] For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. [4] Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. [5] Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. [6] Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. [7] Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. [8] Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Still on "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy"

Titus 3:3-4 ESV
[3] For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. [4] But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared,
[5] he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

Whoa....
"passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another."
Sounds like our world today, doesn't it?
And social media and the ever present news has only made it worse. People "hate" people they don't even personally know. But this passage tells us that this is part of our sinful nature and it has been around for centuries... it's "foolishness" and "disobedient".
So how's your "hatefulness" doing?
Are you finding yourself "hating" people you don't even know?

Romans 12:9 ESV
[9] Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.

Paul tells us in Romans that we are to abhor (hate) evil... which is the devil and sin itself. Hate is sinful... period. We are called to love... not hate.

Ephesians 5:2 ESV
[2] And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

ALL of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God...
but...
because of his "goodness and lovingkindness...
he saved us...
according to his own mercy"
through Jesus on the cross.
Nothing we have done.
Nothing we could do.
All because of his mercy. He shows us mercy when we do not deserve it. We are to show others that same mercy because of the mercy he showed us.

Matthew 5:8 ESV
[8] “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Pure in heart. It is not perfection or sinlessness. If that were the case, none of us would see God. So what does it mean?
καθαρός (katharoi) - clean, undivided, whole.no duplicity, mixed motives or a secret life.
It is having one desire... God himself. Not his blessings. Not his power. Him.
"To be pure in heart is to want Him more than you want to be impressive, liked, safe, or vindicated." - Matt Chandler, Becoming Like Jesus.

James put it this way...
[7] Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. [8] Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:7-8 ESV

And as we want him more and more, it redirects our affections and we want what he wants. So how do we work on becoming pure in heart? "Purity of heart grows slowly through practices like confession, repentance, Scripture meditation, and Sabbath." It takes work. And it can HURT. Like refining gold, it must go through a fire...a very, very, hot fire. And notice in the list - scripture. Remember, the word is sharp like a double edged sword that cuts deep.... expect some surgery along the way.
So we recognize and confess our own sin... becoming open before God (There's that poor in spirit beatitude). Stay in the Word and rest in him. Let him work.
And the result of a pure heart? "They shall see God." Not just in the final day, but in this world. You will see him all around you... in nature, in situations, in relationships, in others, in the weak, in the poor, in the suffering.... you WILL see God.

So let's focus our hearts today on ONE thing...God.
"One thing I ask and I would seek...to see your beauty. To find you in the place your glory dwells"

Matthew 5:7 ESV
[7] “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

Mercy, in Greek, ἔλεος
"It means compassion, pity, and active kindness. In ancient times, the root of this word was closely associated with olive oil—a soothing, comforting, and healing balm poured directly onto wounds. "

"Where justice is getting what we deserve, and grace is getting what we don’t deserve, mercy is not getting what we do deserve...Mercy involves both compassion for the hurting and forgiveness for the guilty. Mercy also always costs the giver something emotionally, relationally, or personally." - Becoming Like Christ, Matt Chandler

The author of this study uses the situation on Jean Valjean in Les Mis to describe this. When Valjean is released from prison, a church Bishop takes him in. Valjean proceeds to steal the church's silver and is caught by the police. He's brought to the Bishop who refuses to accuse him of theft and then hands him 2 silver candlesticks saying "You forgot these". Wow.

Jesus showed mercy over and over again...
A man with leprosy, Touched. Healed.
A blind beggar along the road. Touched. Healed.
A woman hemorrhaging touches his garment. He turns to see her. Touched. Healed.
The paralyzed man brought through the roof. Touched. Healed.
All untouchables, the castouts of society. None of these situations were convenient. Jesus stopped. Jesus saw them. He took mercy on them and healed them.
Then he died on a cross for you and I. And what did he say about those who crucified and shamed him? "Father forgive them".

We are promised in Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV
[22] The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; [23] they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. But his mercy is NEW for us every morning...Fresh mercy over and over and over again. And this should move us to mercy for others. Is it easy? No. We want justice. We don't want to be interrupted. We don't want to get in the middle of others' messes. That's the cost we pay. But Jesus's cost he paid for your mercy? His life.

"You are what you eat" actually came from a quote from a French Gourmet who said, 'Tell me what you eat, and I'll tell you what you are".
What we consume indeed impacts us... it's true for the mind a well as the body. Which takes us back to this beatitude:

Matthew 5:6 ESV
[6] “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

We should want to hunger for a "right relationship" with God. Paul tells us in Phil 4:8-9 what our "diets" should consist of on a daily basis for our heart and minds :
Philippians 4:8 ESV
[8] Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

What are you consuming on a daily basis for your mind? Have you thought about how that may be impacting your life? Your heart? Your mind? Is it leading you toward God or pulling you away... distracting you?

In our sermon yesterday, Pastor Joel talked about 4 of the 7 habits Christians need... one is being in the Word. It feeds us. It is truth. It cuts us, changes us, and leads us to hunger and thirst for him more and more.

Think about how you can change what you are consuming for your mind. Make a plan as to how you can get more of God's word in your diet. And be prepared to hunger and thirst for more and more of it.

Matthew 5:6 ESV
[6] “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Hunger- the word used here is "peinao" which is more like famished, starved.
Thirst - the word used here is "dipsao" which is parched, dried out, dehydrated
How many of us have really ever felt that in regards to our actual bodily hunger or thirst?
But he hunger and thirst described in this beatitude is one of the soul... the heart. Wanting... yearning... for "right" relationship with God, others, creation, and ourselves.

It's a longing. We all have it deep inside. We are all looking for it. Like the psalmist:
Psalm 42:1-2 ESV
[1] As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. [2] My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?

Like Moses:
Exodus 33:18 ESV
[18] Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”

David and Moses had spoken with God, were very near to God... yet they still had this longing for more. To see him face to face.
And we have all kinds of things in this world that we use to try and quench this hunger.
And often, these can be what we would call "good" things... money, fame, acceptance, accolades, likes, comfort, entertainment, success.... the list is endless. They dull our hunger and thirst for the only thing that truly satisfies...God. Like chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant, they dull our hunger for the real meal that is to come.

Like Paul who only wanted to know Jesus more and more. Let's lean into that ache and longing that we are promised...
Revelation 22:3-4 ESV
[3] No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. [4] They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.
