"Poor in spirit" -here's a great example of someone who was not.
Good ole Neb was considered a great military strategist and built impressive buildings... but got a little too full of himself.

Daniel 4:30-37 NIV
[30] he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?” [31] Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, “This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you. [32] You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.” [33] Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people and ate grass like the ox. His body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird. [34] At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever. His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endures from generation to generation. [35] All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: “What have you done?” [36] At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom. My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before. [37] Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.

He raised his eyes toward heaven and his "sanity was restored"!!! He saw what he had done and praised God for all HE had done, all he is. And he recognized that this was not his kingdom at all. "His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endures from generation to generation."
It was his kingdom then and is his kingdom now. Open your eyes. Look up toward heaven.
God...
Your kingdom come...
Your will be done...
In our hearts and lives today.
We are nothing without you.
Rule in our lives.
Reign in our hearts.
Tear down the walls and kingdoms we've built.
To you be glory, honor, and power forever and ever.
Amen.

Blessed are the poor in spirit.

Psalms 13:1-6 NIV
[1] How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? [2] How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? [3] Look on me and answer, Lord my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death, [4] and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,” and my foes will rejoice when I fall. [5] But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. [6] I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me.

"Day after day have sorrow in my heart."
Being poor in spirit means recognizing the sin in our own lives and being truly sorrowful for our condition.
This is how we first enter into our relationship with Christ. A sorrowful, "I need you Jesus because I cannot do this on my own". And because we know he is faithful and has washed away that sin on the cross, we rejoice... "my heart rejoices in your salvation."

We thank you Lord for your gracious gift of mercy and grace. We are nothing.... we have nothing... without you. Give light to our eyes today so we see your glory. Mold us to be more like You. You are so so good. Amen

Philippians 1:9-11 NIV
[9] And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, [10] so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, [11] filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.

"Depth of insight"
"Be able to discern"
Listen to/ hearing God's promptings in your life can be difficult. It takes "stillness". This message has resounded the past weeks in my life. From our "Every Thought Captive study" -> to a podcast i listened to -> to a message from a sermon yesterday-> to a song last night.

We have to listen to that whisper or sometimes it's more like a brick over head. But if you take the time and pray and listen, God's voice can be very clear in your life, giving you that true discernment of what is good, true and right and what he's trying to change in you. He is not done with you yet.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 NIV
[23] May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. [24] The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.

Whatever you are going through... on top of that hill or deep in the dark valley...he's working. Be still and know. He is God. HE WILL DO IT!!!!

Exodus 17: 8-16. The Israelites are battling the Amalekites. They would succeed as long as Moses had his hands raised (with the staff).

Exodus 17:12 NIV
[12] When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.

Moses couldn't do it alone. He needed others to help him. We all need that. And Aaron, who led the army into battle, couldn't win without God. Walking in this world alone would be difficult to say the least.
But who you walk with matters. And the direction you are walking matters.
You need people who love you and hold you accountable. You need people who are focused on Christ, not on the world.

As we "run this race" called life, let's help each other endure. Let's help each other "fix our eyes" on God, not on the battle. Do not lose heart, for he has overcome the world.

Romans 8:35-39 NIV
[35] Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? [36] As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” [37] No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. [38] For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, [39] neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Read it again.

Let it sink in.

Read it again.

Nothing... nothing of this world (creation)... can separate us from his love. And we are more than conquerers through Christ.

Isaiah 12:1-6 NIV
[1] In that day you will say: “I will praise you, Lord. Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you have comforted me. [2] Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.” [3] With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. [4] In that day you will say: “Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted. [5] Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world. [6] Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.”

He has done glorious things!!!!
Thank you, God, for your salvation. You are our strength today. You are our defense today. Your comfort is with your peace. We trust in you today for our manna... our daily provision.
Forgive us today. We praise you and thank you. Amen

Psalms 92:1-5 NIV
[1] It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O Most High, [2] proclaiming your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, [3] to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp. [4] For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord; I sing for joy at what your hands have done. [5] How great are your works, Lord, how profound your thoughts!

"Proclaiming your love in the morning"
Imagine reminding ourselves every morning just how much God dearly loves us. And proclaiming it....outloud.
I am loved
I am chosen
I am a beloved child of God
I was knit together by you, Lord
You have plans for me that are good
You go with me today, wherever I go

"Proclaiming..... your faithfulness at night"
And then proclaim every night how faithful the Lord has been to us. Giving us air to breathe... food to eat, shelter, love, grace, and mercy. And forgiveness through Jesus Christ.
"For your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life"

Oh, how great are his works.
Oh, how great is his name.
Oh, how great is our God!!!!

We thank you Lord for this day. Thank you for your love that surpasses anything we could imagine. Thank you for your grace and mercy that are so undeserved. Forgive us our trespasses today. May we abide in you today and worship you and you alone. We praise your Holy name. Amen
