The parish began in 1853 as St Mary’s Chapel, a humble attap chapel for the Teochew Catholic gambier and pepper farmers and fishermen living in the Aukang area. By 1901, a beautiful neo-Gothic church was built to replace the chapel and was named the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
