In the mid-1920s, the need was felt for a new church to be built near the port, in south-western Singapore. The area had a growing po

pulation, and though rural, there was a number of Hokkien-speaking Catholics. The prime mover of the church-building project was Reverend Monsignor Emile J. Mariette, the parish priest of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul on Queen Street. Father Mariette died from an accident during the building of the church, and Father Stephen Lee then saw the project to completion. The patron saint of the church is Saint Thรฉrรจse of Lisieux. In April 1935, Father Lee took up residence at the church and the Catholic population continued growing as new housing developments took place in the city district. Father Lee also founded and built the Saint Teresaโ€™s Sino-English School and supported the construction of the Monastery of Christ the King on Bukit Teresa. This was to house the contemplative Carmelite nuns, who arrived in Singapore from Bangkok, Thailand, in 1938. Today, more than 15 nuns are there leading a life of prayer and poverty. The Church of Saint Teresa is the only building in Singapore featuring the Romano-Byzantine style. This is defined by the use of grand domes, cupolas, and arches. If you find the architecture familiar, it is because Reverend Father Jean M. Ouillon, the Procurator of the MEP (Sociรฉtรฉ des Missions Etrangรจres de Paris) in Singapore, was inspired by the architecture of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Montmartre, Paris, France. Emile Brizay, who designed the Former Ford Factory, was the one who prepared the final architectural plans. The Church of Saint Teresa is a living testimony to the contributions of Catholic missionaries and the growth of the Catholic community in the city district. The S'pore wing of the Apostleship of the Sea, an international Catholic association that serves the spiritual needs of seafarers, was launched in 1958 and continues to be based there as well.

โœจ Easter Vigil Mass 2026 | Part 4 (Conclusion): First Holy Communion & Dismissal โœจ

The Easter Vigil reached its joyful culmination as our newly initiated brothers and sisters received the Holy Eucharist for the very first time, completing their Sacraments of Christian Initiation.

Nourished by the Body and Blood of Christ, they were fully united with the Catholic Church, sharing at the Lord's Table alongside the entire faith community. It was a beautiful reminder that, through Christ, we are one family called to live in communion with God and with one another.

As the celebration drew to a close, we were sent forth with the joyful proclamation of the Resurrection to bring Christ's light into the world. The Easter Vigil does not simply commemorate an event of the pastโ€”it renews our call to live as Easter people, bearing witness to the hope, joy, and new life found in the Risen Lord.

May the grace we receive throughout this sacred night continue to strengthen us in faith, inspire us in hope, and lead us to serve others with Christ-like love.

Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

โœจ Easter Vigil Mass 2026 | Part 4: Liturgy of the Eucharist โœจ

Having listened to God's Word and celebrated the Sacraments of Christian Initiation, the Church gathered around the altar to celebrate the Holy Eucharistโ€”the source and summit of our Christian life.

During the Offertory, bread and wine were presented to God, together with the prayers, sacrifices, and thanksgiving of the faithful. Through the Eucharistic Prayer, these humble gifts became the true Body and Blood of Christ, making present the one sacrifice of Christ on Calvary and nourishing us with the Bread of Life.

For our newly baptised and newly received brothers and sisters, this was an especially profound moment as they participated fully in the celebration of the Eucharist for the first time, united with the entire Church at the Lord's Table.

As we reflect on this sacred mystery, may we always approach the altar with reverence, gratitude, and hearts open to the transforming love of Christ, who continually feeds us with His Body and Blood.

โœจ Easter Vigil Mass 2026 | Part 3 (Continued): Baptismal Liturgy โ€“ Renewal of Baptismal Promises โœจ

Following the celebration of Baptism and Confirmation, the entire congregation was invited to renew our baptismal promises, reaffirming our rejection of sin and our profession of faith in the Risen Christ.

The Sprinkling Rite followed, as holy waterโ€”blessed during the Easter Vigilโ€”was sprinkled upon the faithful. This symbolic gesture reminded us of our own Baptism, our cleansing from sin, and the new life we have received through Christ's Resurrection.

United as one family in faith, we then offered the Prayer of the Faithful, entrusting the needs of the Church and the world to God, while praying especially for our newly initiated brothers and sisters as they begin their journey of faith within our parish community.

May the grace of our Baptism continue to renew our hearts each day, inspiring us to live as faithful disciples and joyful witnesses to the hope of the Risen Lord.

โœจ Easter Vigil Mass 2026 | Part 3 (Continued): Baptismal Liturgy โ€“ Celebration of Confirmation โœจ

Having been reborn through the waters of Baptism and welcomed into the Catholic Church, our newly initiated were strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit through the Sacrament of Confirmation.

As they were anointed with Sacred Chrism, they were sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spiritโ€”a sacred sign of God's enduring love and a commissioning to live as faithful witnesses of Christ in the world.

May the Holy Spirit continue to guide and strengthen them, filling their hearts with wisdom, courage, understanding, and peace as they grow in faith and joyfully share the Gospel through their words and actions.

Let us continue to keep our newly confirmed brothers and sisters in prayer as they embrace this new chapter of their journey with Christ and His Church.

โœจ Easter Vigil Mass 2026 | Part 3 (Continued): Baptismal Liturgy โœจ

Following their Baptism, the newly baptised were clothed with the white baptismal garmentโ€”a visible sign that they have become a new creation in Christ, washed clean of sin, and called to live a life of holiness.

They then received a lighted candle lit from the Paschal Candle, symbolising the Light of Christ entrusted to them. As they are called to keep this flame of faith burning brightly, may they walk always as children of the Light.

We also warmly welcomed our Candidates into the full communion of the Catholic Church. Having already been baptised in the Christian faith, they were received into the Church and now share fully in the sacramental life of the Catholic faith.

Let us continue to keep our newly baptised and newly received brothers and sisters in prayer, that they may remain steadfast in faith, joyful in hope, and generous in charity as they journey with Christ and His Church.

โœจ Easter Vigil Mass 2026 | Part 3: Baptismal Liturgy โœจ

The Baptismal Liturgy is a profound celebration of new life in Christ.

Holding our lighted candles, we renewed our baptismal promises by renouncing sin, professing our faith, and recommitting ourselves to follow Christ faithfully. Together, we proclaimed the faith that unites us as one Church.

We also rejoiced as our Elects received the Sacrament of Baptism, passing from death to life and becoming new creations in Christ. Through the waters of Baptism, they were welcomed into God's family and began a new life of faith, hope, and love.

May their joyful witness remind us to live each day as children of the Light, faithfully reflecting Christ's love to all whom we meet.

โœจ Easter Vigil Mass 2026 | Part 2: Liturgy of the Word โœจ

In the stillness of the night, the Church listened once again to the story of our salvation.

Through the sacred readingsโ€”from the creation of the world, God's covenant with His people, and the promises of the prophetsโ€”we journeyed through salvation history, witnessing God's unwavering love and faithfulness throughout the ages.

With the joyful proclamation of the Gloria, the church bells rang out once more, heralding the Resurrection of our Lord. The proclamation of the Gospel then announced the Good News that Christ is risen indeed, bringing hope and new life to all.

As we reflect on these sacred moments, may we continue to treasure God's Word and allow it to guide us in our daily lives.

Now that the Easter season has come to a close, let's take a look back at the beautiful celebrations that marked our journey from darkness into the light of Christ.

โœจ Easter Vigil Mass 2026 | Part 1: Lucernarium โœจ

The Easter Vigil begins in darkness, where the new fire is blessed, and the Paschal Candle is litโ€”a powerful reminder that Christ, our Light, has conquered sin and death.

As the flame of the Paschal Candle was shared among the faithful, the church was gradually illuminated, symbolising the light of the Risen Christ spreading throughout the world and into our hearts.

"May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds."
