Just to the left of the Cathedral steps is a young pear tree.

You may have walked past it without noticing.

But this young tree has a 180-year-old story.🌳

It is a descendant of a tree planted at Taupiri in 1843 by Anglican missionary Reverend Benjamin Gate Ashwell and carries a piece of Waikato’s history and heritage.

As you approach the Cathedral, one of the things that may not immediately draw your eye is a young pear tree on the left as you walk up the steps. Known as the Ashwell pear tree, this tree has a history dating back more than 180 years.
