This year, Hamilton Civic Choir celebrates an incredible 80 years of bringing music and community together through song. To mark this special milestone, the Hamilton Civic Choir and St Peter’s Cathedral Choir will join voices for a memorable concert at St Peter’s Cathedral.

🎶 Maana e Whakarewa — Raising Voices in Song 🎶

The “feature” piece of this concert is the fabulous Gabriel Fauré “Requiem”, a well-known but always welcomed piece.

The solos will be sung by representatives of each choir- soprano- Gabriella Schuitemaker from the Cathedral Choir, and baritone- Robert Abbel of the Hamilton Civic Choir.

With the organ accompaniment by Dr Rachael Griffiths-Hughes MNZM and Elise Bradley MNZM, this shall be a wonderful performance.

Both choirs will present several joint pieces as well as performing some of their own individual repertoire, including “Here is The River” by Fergus Byett, a favourite ex-chorister of both choirs!

Other pieces sure to delight include the “Kyrie” from F.J. Haydn's “Nelson Mass” “A Star shall rise up out of Jacob”, F Mendelssohn, The R. Vaughan-Williams “Let all the World in Every Corner Sing” As well as an organ solo; “Theme and Variations” by Hendrik Andriessen will be played by the cathedral’s organist, Anne Cleaver-Holm.

Join us, Saturday 13th June, at St Peter’s Cathedral for a beautiful evening of choral voices in a stunning setting.

🎟 Tickets from $10 on Humantix, or at the door (subject to availability).

Congratulations to all those recognised in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours, and especially to our Director of Music, Dr Rachael Griffiths-Hughes, who has been named a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to music.

Rachael has been Director of Music at St Peter’s Cathedral since 2000, and we are deeply grateful for her leadership, dedication, and passion. We are delighted to see her contribution recognised in this way. She is a blessing to our Cathedral and wider community.

Congratulations, Rachael. From all of us at St Peter’s Cathedral, this honour is so well deserved.

Aidan Thomas Phillips sang his first tenor solo with the Cathedral Choir at 14. He is now based in the UK, rehearsing for four productions with a fifth on the way.

For a young singer already on his way, the Cathedral Choir was a place that supported and encouraged him. In his own words, it remains "a place that will always be near and dear to my heart as a spiritual home."

Aidan reflects on his time in the choir and the musical journey that followed.
