In English grammar, the phrase "great God and Saviour" linked by the coordinating conjunction "and" is called a substantive. The latter is a word or group of words functioning as a noun.

In the Greek, this substantive identifies God and Saviour as referring to a singular noun that follows it. In this case, Titus refers explicitly to the divine title describing Jesus as both God and Saviour, without reservation.

This substantive rule was observed by Granville Sharp (called Granville Sharp's rule), who states that when two singular, personal, and non-proper nouns of the same case are connected by the Greek word for "and" (kai), and the first noun has the definite article (the) while the second does not, both nouns refer to the exact same person
