East African Bishops Reflect on Ethical Investments Ahead of 21st AMECEA Plenary Assembly
Catholic bishops, Church institutions, religious congregations, and development partners from across Eastern Africa gathered in Nairobi to explore the role of ethical investment in advancing the Church's mission, human dignity, and care for creation during a workshop held ahead of the 21st AMECEA Plenary Assembly.
Organized by the Laudato Si' Movement Africa in collaboration with the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA), the workshop brought together diocesan Justice and Peace Commissions, Catholic development agencies, and other Church stakeholders to examine how institutional investment decisions can better reflect the values of the Gospel and Catholic Social Teaching.
Participants reflected on the Church's growing commitment to faith-consistent investments, drawing inspiration from Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si' and Vatican guidance on ethical finance. Discussions also considered the social and environmental implications of extractive industries, including fossil fuel projects such as the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).
Speaking during the workshop, Lorna Gold, Executive Director of the Laudato Si' Movement, emphasized that the Church's witness extends beyond preaching to the responsible stewardship of its financial resources.
"The Church's witness is shaped not only by what we preach, but also by the choices we make. Ethical investment is about ensuring that our resources reflect our faith, protect human dignity, and contribute to a future rooted in justice and care for creation," she said.
Participants heard perspectives from community representatives and environmental advocates who underscored the importance of investments that promote sustainable development while safeguarding communities and the environment.
Br. Benedict Ayodi, Africa Advisor for the Laudato Si' Movement, reminded Church leaders of their responsibility to care for both people and creation.
"As shepherds of God's people, we are called to care not only for souls but also for creation. This dialogue challenges us to ensure that our decisions, including how our institutions invest, reflect the values of the Gospel," he noted.
The workshop forms part of a wider global Catholic movement encouraging dioceses, religious congregations, universities, and lay organizations to review their investment policies, gradually moving away from fossil fuel investments while supporting initiatives that foster renewable energy, environmental sustainability, and resilient communities.
According to the organizers, recommendations emerging from the workshop and possible follow-up actions within AMECEA structures will be communicated through appropriate Church channels in the coming weeks.
