The Place of the Lay Associates

This afternoon, the Assembly had the grace of listening to the voice of the laity, represented by Ms. Pauline Thomas, who joined us virtually from the UK. As a member of the International Coordination Team for Lay Associates and Associations, and as Co-President of the European Committee for Oblate Laity, she offered a sincere reflection drawn from her personal experience and from the region’s living of the Oblate charism as a lay person.

Accompanied by Fr. Giuseppe RUBINO, OMI (Co-President), and Fr. Christoph HEINEMANN, OMI (Accompanying European Provincial), her presence was a testimony that the Oblate charism lives not only in the Oblates, but also in the many lay men and women who carry this spirit into their families, workplaces, and communities. Après l’intense journée d’hier, mercredi 17 juin, centrée sur la réalité des Oblats venus d’autres Unités de la Congrégation pour exercer leur ministère en Europe, l’attention s’est portée aujourd’hui sur la question économique.

Le P. Leo PHILIMON, président de la CET, a proposé une réflexion sur la manière dont les Unités d’Europe vivent actuellement la réalité économique. Il a souligné en particulier la valeur de la pauvreté évangélique et l’importance de la solidarité entre les Unités pour soutenir la mission commune.

De son côté, le P. Charles RENSBURG, Économe Général, a élargi la réflexion à la situation de toute la Congrégation, notamment en ce qui concerne le nombre et l’âge des Oblats. Il a également mis en lumière une prise de conscience croissante de l’importance de la solidarité en Europe, malgré la diminution des ressources économiques. Vivre la pauvreté évangélique à travers le travail quotidien, un style de vie simple et le soutien mutuel devient ainsi un signe concret de fraternité et d’attention entre frères.

La journée s’est conclue par une visite guidée de Bucarest, une rencontre très fraternelle et joyeuse avec l’Évêque auxiliaire, ainsi qu’un moment de convivialité fraternelle.

Fr. Christoph Heinemann, OMI, Provincial Superior of the Central European Province, presided at the Eucharistic celebration on the third day of the Joint Session in Bucharest, where he reflected on the Gospel of the day. Below is an excerpt from his homily.

“The Magna Carta of the Kingdom of God
“Let your light shine before others” (Mt 5:16), says Jesus, yet He also warns: “Do not practice your righteousness before others to be seen by them” (Mt 6:1). This apparent tension reminds us that the Christian life is not about recognition or public image, but about something deeper: the coming of the Kingdom of God.

Especially in times when the Church faces criticism, we may be tempted to highlight its good works. Yet Jesus redirects our focus, not to reputation, but to authentic discipleship. Being Christian is not about visibility or approval, but about participating in building a world rooted in justice, peace, and the values of the Beatitudes.

To this end, Jesus proposes three essential practices: almsgiving, prayer, and fasting.
- Almsgiving calls us to live solidarity and justice, sharing not only material goods but also responsibility and influence.
- Prayer roots us in God’s love, inviting us to seek His will and live in relationship with Him.
- Fasting teaches self-discipline, helping us to master our desires and focus on what truly matters.

Together, these practices express the central commandment: to love God and love our neighbor. They form the true “Magna Carta” of the Kingdom of God, a path toward inner transformation and a renewed world.
The change of the world begins in each of us. May we live these simple yet profound commitments in our daily lives.

On Wednesday afternoon, participants in the Joint Session visited the city of Bucharest, discovering its rich history and culture, and shared a moment of faith through a pilgrimage to the Cathedral, where they were welcomed by the Auxiliary Bishop, His Excellency Bishop Cornel Damian.

Sesión conjunta del Gobierno Central y la Región Europea
Dìa II – Martes 16 de junio

La jornada de este martes estuvo dedicada a la interculturalidad. Como congregación misionera, los Misioneros Oblatos de María Inmaculada llevamos esta dimensión en nuestro ADN.

Por la mañana, la hermana Tiziana Merletti, secretaria del Dicasterio para la Vida Consagrada, ofreció una reflexión titulada «Interculturalidad y vida religiosa en Europa».

Su presentación se articuló en torno a tres ejes principales:

Una visión general de la cultura en la que estamos inmersos actualmente.
La figura bíblica de la resurrección de Lázaro (Jn 11,1-44), como clave para afrontar los desafíos de la vida religiosa en nuestros días, especialmente en el mundo occidental.
La tarea de convertirnos en auténticos artesanos de la interculturalidad dentro de nuestros institutos y en la misión que compartimos.
Por la tarde, Pasquale Castrilli, presidente de la Comisión Europea de la Misión (CEM), coordinó una actualización sobre el Congreso Crossing Borders, celebrado en febrero pasado en Nikolauskloster, Alemania.

A través de Zoom, Jean George Zyilhoubé y John Thomas David, conectados desde Orly y Essen respectivamente, compartieron sus impresiones sobre el congreso y los principales aprendizajes que les dejó esta experiencia. Asimismo, los cuatro superiores provinciales presentes en el encuentro ofrecieron sus reflexiones y perspectivas.

La jornada continuó con una presentación de Raymond Mwangala sobre el tema «Crossing Borders, la interculturalidad y la misión de la Congregación hoy».

Durante su intervención, también abordó algunos de los principales desafíos de la misión oblata en Europa, entre ellos la disminución del personal misionero y la creciente realidad de las migraciones, que continúa interpelando a la Iglesia y a la Congregación en el contexto actual.
