Japan Airlines CEO Cut His Own Pay To Protect His Employees

When Japan Airlines hit hard financial times in the late 2000s, CEO Haruka Nishimatsu made an unusual choice. Instead of cutting jobs, he cut his own salary by 60%, bringing his pay down to around $90,000, less than some of the airline's pilots.

Nishimatsu also gave up executive perks. He commuted to work by bus, ate lunch in the staff cafeteria with employees, and wore affordable suits instead of designer ones. He believed management should stay close to the people doing the everyday work, not separated from them.

Her name was Wu Ping. It was 2007 in Chongqing, China. Of 281 families asked to leave for a new shopping mall, she was the only one who said no.

Construction crews excavated the entire area around her house. The photos went around the world. People started calling it a "nail house" — because it refused to budge while everything else changed.

The standoff lasted three years. It finally ended with a settlement, and the house was eventually torn down.

But the image stayed. One small house on a hill of dirt became one of the most powerful symbols of ordinary people standing their ground.

Sometimes one person saying no changes everything.
