Looking out of a window in Bronllys Castle in Powys, Wales.
Bronllys Castle was originally constructed of wood in about 1100 by Richard Fitz Pons. In 1144, Richard's son, Walter rebuilt it in stone and added a round tower on its motte. In 1165, the round tower caught fire and a stone tumbling from the battlements killed the only brother of a wealthy landowner.
Following the deposition and death of Richard II in 1399, the Glyndŵr Rising broke out in Wales. The Glyndŵr Rising was a Welsh rebellion led by Owain Glyndŵr against England during the Late Middle Ages. During the rebellion's height between 1403 and 1406, Owain exercised control over the majority of Wales after capturing several of the most powerful English castles in the country.
Bronllys castle was fortified against Owain Glyndŵr's forces, but after the war, Bronllys was never again occupied and fell to ruin. It is now maintained by Cadw, the arm of the Welsh Assembly charged with care of historic monuments.
My fantasy book, Witterkin, contains some interesting castle ruins. The book is available in all formats online. https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/witterkin-w-k-greyling/1141414069
