Did you know the Cathedral was originally designed to be one of the largest churches in the world?

Sir Edwin Lutyens, one of Britain’s greatest architects, was commissioned to design a vast Catholic cathedral for Liverpool, intended to be second in size only to St Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

The foundation stone was laid on 5 June 1933, marking the beginning of an extraordinary chapter in the Cathedral’s story.

While Lutyens’ grand design was never completed, his vision remains an important part of our history. His crypt, which was completed as part of the original project, can still be visited beneath the Cathedral today. ✨
