A Short History of Pluscarden Abbey

Ever wondered about the story behind Pluscarden Abbey?

In this video, Fr Giles OSB gives a whistle-stop tour of the history of Catholicism in Scotland — from medieval times, through the Reformation, to the present day — all from the grounds of Pluscarden Abbey.

As we prepare for the National Youth Pilgrimage, it’s a great opportunity to learn a little more about the remarkable place we’ll be visiting.

Watch the video and discover more about the history, faith and life of Pluscarden Abbey.

Silence isn't a luxury. It's a necessity of the soul.

This September 26th, young people from across Scotland are making pilgrimage together — stepping away from the noise and walking toward something worth clinging to.

Pluscarden Abbey is the only medieval British monastery still being used for its original purpose — standing in northeast Scotland since 1230. Within its walls, a community of Benedictine monks continue to pray and welcome pilgrims for an encounter with God in the peace of the glen.

Today we celebrate the feast of St Dominic.

But have you ever wondered why he is often pictured with a dog carrying a torch?

According to Dominican tradition, his mother, Blessed Joan of Aza, dreamed that she gave birth to a dog carrying a torch, which went out and set the world on fire.

The image became a symbol of Dominic’s mission: to carry the light of Christ into the world through preaching.

“Go forth and set the world on fire.”

St Dominic, pray for us.

The feast day of St. John Vianney reminds us that holiness is never private. A priest who lives close to Christ can help lead an entire community closer to God. Today we pray for our priests and for future shepherds of the Church.
