Beginning August 1, with the blessing of Fr. Nicholas, our church will begin offering introductory sessions on the traditional making of Orthodox church candles from natural beeswax.
During these sessions, Fr. Nicholas will introduce participants to the traditional process of making church candles used during Divine Services, as well as the candles that the faithful light in prayer for the living, for the departed, and on other sacred occasions in the life of the Church.
Participants will be introduced to:
🕯️ natural beeswax and its unique properties;
🕯️ the purpose and spiritual significance of church candles;
🕯️ the tools and equipment used in candle making;
🕯️ the traditional methods and techniques of making church candles;
🕯️ essential safety procedures when working with wax and equipment.
These are introductory sessions during which Fr. Nicholas will personally share his experience, introduce participants to the materials, tools, and candle-making process, and answer any questions.
Applications are open to men approximately 18–45 years of age who are actively involved in the life of the Orthodox Church and have a basic understanding of the Orthodox faith.
Applicants should preferably:
• attend Orthodox church services on a regular basis;
• understand the purpose of church candles and their place in the life of the Church;
• know at least the basic Orthodox prayers, such as the Lord’s Prayer (“Our Father”);
• have a basic understanding of the order and spiritual meaning of the Divine Services;
• understand the distinction between a priest, a bishop, and an archbishop;
• have a basic understanding of the Orthodox faith, the Holy Trinity, and the veneration of the saints;
• be of Greek background or have at least a basic understanding of the Greek language;
• show respect for the clergy, the order of the Church, and the traditions of the Orthodox Church.
It is especially important that each participant understands that there is no place in the Church for personal status or superiority. Before God we are all equal, serving together in humility while following the blessing and guidance of Fr. Nicholas.
All matters related to these introductory sessions should be discussed directly with Fr. Nicholas. No actions connected with the church or this ministry should be undertaken without his blessing.
All introductory sessions are conducted with the blessing of Fr. Nicholas, who carries out his ministry with the blessing of our Archbishop.
The sessions will generally be held on Saturdays, primarily on an individual basis. Depending on circumstances, small groups of no more than two or three participants may also be arranged.
