Today, two icons were installed in our church by kind-hearted people — Saint Anastasius the Persian and Saint Nikki.

Behind these icons are people who chose to remain anonymous. They sponsored the writing and installation of two vacant icons spots that were still available in the church.

For some, installing an icon in a church is a way to thank God. For others, it is an opportunity to leave behind something good that will remain for many years to come. For some, it is a way to honor the memory of loved ones through the icon of their heavenly patron. And for others, it is simply a personal offering to the church. For a few it is a way of thanking the saint for responding to their prayer request.

This opportunity is not very common, as many churches already have all their icon spaces filled. Even when new icons are donated, they often remain in storage or are passed on to others. Here, however, there is still an opportunity to install an icon directly in the church.

For some people, this is also a way to let go of a burden they carry in their hearts, do something meaningful, and find inner peace.

🕊️ "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink." (John 7:37)

Deep in our hearts, every person longs for the same things — peace, love, and hope.

This is what Pentecost reminds us of.

"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness." (John 8:12)

May the Holy Spirit fill our hearts with peace, wisdom, and love.

Happy Pentecost! 🕊️

Our beloved Maria joined our Sisterhood today as an expert and representative of the older generation during the preparation of Loukoumades, sharing with us her many years of experience making Loukoumades in our church.

That is why her comments, observations, and recommendations are especially valuable to us.

Thanks to her advice, we were able to make several adjustments and improve our recipe.

We are grateful to Maria for spending the day with us and for her willingness to share her experience.

We would also like to thank our guest, Angela, who visited us today.

🔥 Fifty days after Pascha, Heaven touched Earth🔥

In the Upper Room, the disciples gathered in prayer — and suddenly, a rushing wind filled the house, and tongues of fire descended upon each one of them. In that moment, trembling fishermen became fearless heralds. Broken men became pillars of the Church. The Spirit of God took up His dwelling in human hearts.

This is Pentecost — the Birthday of the Church.

The same Holy Spirit who hovered over the waters at Creation now poured Himself into the hearts of the Apostles, transforming them from the inside out. Fear became courage. Silence became proclamation. Weakness became power from on high.

And here is the breathtaking truth: that same Spirit is given to you — in Baptism, sealed in Chrismation, renewed in every Liturgy, every prayer, every act of love offered to God and neighbour.

The fire did not go out in Jerusalem. It spread across the world, and it burns still.

Come, Holy Spirit. Come and abide in us. 🕊️

Saturday of Souls — Ψυχοσάββατον 🕯️

This Saturday, the eve of Holy Pentecost, our parish observes the Saturday of Souls (Ψυχοσάββατον) — one of the most ancient and tender expressions of our Orthodox faith.

On this day, we commemorate all those who have fallen asleep in the Lord, from Adam and Eve down to those most recently departed. With reverence, we ask God to forgive all their transgressions and to grant them rest “in a place of green pasture.”

The Holy Fathers, moved by their love for mankind, have appointed this common memorial for all pious Orthodox Christians who have reposed throughout the ages — so that those who did not receive particular memorial services may be included in this universal commemoration of all.

The beautiful phrase “Memory Eternal” goes beyond simply cherishing fond memories of those who have departed; it is a living prayer to the Lord for their eternal rest in Him.

We invite all parishioners to submit the names of their departed loved ones for commemoration. Kollyva will be blessed at the service.

Αἰωνία ἡ μνήμη αὐτῶν. May their memory be eternal.

Αύριο, Σάββατο προ της Αγίας Πεντηκοστής, η ενορία μας τελεί το ιερό Ψυχοσάββατον — μια από τις πιο αρχαίες και συγκινητικές εκφράσεις της Ορθοδόξου πίστεώς μας.

Κατά την ημέρα αυτή, μνημονεύουμε όλους τους κεκοιμημένους αδελφούς μας εν Χριστώ, από τον Αδάμ και την Εύα έως τους προσφάτως μεταστάντας. Με κατάνυξη, παρακαλούμε τον Θεό να συγχωρήσει όλα τους τα παραπτώματα και να τους αναπαύσει «εν τόπω χλοερώ».

Οι θείοι Πατέρες, κινούμενοι από τη φιλανθρωπία τους, όρισαν αυτή την κοινή μνημόνευση για όλους τους κεκοιμημένους Ορθοδόξους Χριστιανούς, ώστε κανείς να μη στερηθεί της εκκλησιαστικής μνήμης.

Παρακαλούνται οι ενορίτες να προσκομίσουν ονόματα κεκοιμημένων για να αναγνωσθούν κατά τη Νεκρώσιμη Ακολουθία. Κόλλυβα θα ευλογηθούν μετά τη Θεία Λειτουργία.

✝️ Holy Righteous John the Russian — 27 May

Born in Russia around 1690, John was taken prisoner during the Russo-Turkish war and enslaved by a Turkish cavalry commander in Asia Minor. Threatened and tortured to abandon his faith, he refused — and spent the rest of his life as a slave, living in a stable, keeping vigil, receiving Holy Communion, and quietly serving all around him in love.

After his repose in 1730, countless miracles were worked through his prayers — drawing pilgrims not only from among the Orthodox, but even Turks, who cried out: “Servant of God, do not disdain us.”

His holiness was forged not in a monastery, but in chains. A saint for all who suffer.

The Sacred Meaning of the Prosphora

In the Orthodox Church, the seal impressed upon the Prosphora is considered sacred. At the center of the seal are the letters “IC XC NIKA,” meaning “Jesus Christ Conquers.” During the service of Proskomidi, the priest carefully cuts the central square portion called the Lamb.

The Lamb later becomes the Holy Eucharist during the Divine Liturgy. The surrounding sections of the seal represent the Mother of God, the saints, and the faithful.

Preparation of the Holy Gifts

Small particles are removed with reverence and placed upon the holy diskos during the preparation of the Gifts.

The preparation of the Prosphora is considered a sacred ministry and an offering of prayer, faith, and devotion to God.
