☦️ MEMORIAL SERVICE – ELEFTHERIA FASSOULARIS

This Sunday, 1 November, the family of our beloved Eleftheria Fassoularis will be commemorating her memory with a Memorial Service.

Eleftheria was a devoted member of our parish, faithfully serving our Church since 1988. For many years, she generously gave her time to the Church kitchen, preparing meals, helping those in need, and serving our community with love, kindness, and humility.

Her dedication was a beautiful reflection of her deep faith and love for Christ and His Church.

We invite our parishioners to join her family in prayer as we remember Eleftheria and honour her life of faithful service.

May our Lord grant her eternal rest, and may her memory remain forever in our hearts.

Two new icons for our church

Today we installed two beautiful new icons, generously donated to our parish: St. Kyriakos the Anchorite and St. Pelagia of Antioch. We are deeply grateful to the donors. May their gift be a blessing to them and to all who pray before these saints.

St. Kyriakos the Anchorite (September 29) was born in Corinth and spent nearly a century as a monk and hermit in the Judean desert, reposing at around 107 years of age. In the icon he holds a scroll that reads: Blessed is he who is lofty in virtue, yet humble in mind."

St. Pelagia of Antioch (October 😎 was a celebrated actress, renowned for her beauty and living a worldly life. Moved to tears by the preaching of Bishop Nonnus, she repented, was baptized, and withdrew to the Mount of Olives, where she lived as a hermit and reposed in holiness. She reminds us that no one is beyond the mercy of God.

Great Newtown Church photograph to celebrate OXI Day! 🇬🇷

Taken in 1974, during a time when Newtown’s Greek community was at its peak, with approximately 20% of the local population being of Greek heritage.

Pictured from left to right are Kyria Voula, my mother, Kyria Margarita and Kyria Marcou, who remarkably is still teaching after more than 50 years!

A beautiful reminder of Newtown’s rich Greek history, the strong community spirit of the time, and the dedicated teachers who helped preserve our Greek language, culture and traditions for future generations.

Also featured in the photo is the then President of the Church, Mr Passaris, father of the late Jack Passaris. Standing next to Father Karteris is another teacher, Kurie Simeon.

🇬🇷 **Zito i Ellas! Ζήτω η Ελλάδα!** 🇬🇷

Our little Greek school honoured the national day of the 28th of October with a moving presentation. Our students recited poems with love and pride, and together we sang the Greek national anthem.

The courage of the "OXI" lives on in the hearts of our children. Thank you to our teacher, students and families for keeping our language and faith alive!

Το μικρό μας Ελληνικό Σχολείο τίμησε την εθνική επέτειο της 28ης Οκτωβρίου με μια συγκινητική εκδήλωση. Τα παιδιά μας απήγγειλαν ποιήματα με αγάπη και περηφάνια, και όλοι μαζί ψάλαμε τον Εθνικό Ύμνο.

Το «ΟΧΙ» των προγόνων μας ζει στις καρδιές των παιδιών μας. Ευχαριστούμε την δασκάλα, τους μαθητές και οικογένειες που κρατούν ζωντανή τη γλώσσα και την πίστη μας!

Thank you to everyone who gave their time and effort to clean our church today. Through your hard work and loving care, our church looks beautiful and is filled with a sweet fragrance, truly a worthy dwelling place for the praise of God.

May the Lord bless each of you for your labour of love, and may He repay your generosity a hundredfold. Your service is a gift to our whole parish community.

*"Lord, I have loved the beauty of Your house, and the place where Your glory dwells."* (Psalm 25:8)

For more than 30 years, Litsa has dedicated her time, energy and heart to serving those in need through her work in the kitchen.

Her commitment, reliability and hard work have made a lasting difference to our community. Year after year, she has helped ensure that meals are prepared with care, everything runs smoothly, and food is always ready and served on time.

She is not only a wonderful and hardworking member of our kitchen team, but also a kind, caring and compassionate person who treats everyone with warmth and respect.

It is a true pleasure to work alongside her. Her positive attitude, dedication and genuine care for the people we serve make her an invaluable part of our community.

More than 30 years of dedicated service is a remarkable contribution, and we are truly grateful for everything she continues to do. ❤️🙏

Beauty is not only found in smiles and sparkling eyes, but also in the desire to come together, to learn, to share warmth, and to do something good and meaningful.

Under the guidance of two of our experienced sisters, participants explored the art of making prosphora, learning, practising, and discovering the beautiful traditions.

And do you know what brings us the greatest joy?

Seeing how naturally knowledge and traditions are passed on, how our parish community continues to flourish, and how much genuine enthusiasm there is to be part of its life!

We thank our Lord for the blessing of coming together, working in service to His Church, and strengthening our faith through these meaningful experiences.

Our heartfelt gratitude also goes to His Eminence Archbishop Makarios for his archpastoral blessing and continued support of our activities, making these wonderful initiatives possible.

Celebrating the Feast of Panagia Myrtidiotissa in Dubbo, NSW

Every year on 24 September, the Greek Orthodox community of Dubbo, NSW, comes together to celebrate the Feast of Panagia Myrtidiotissa (Our Lady of the Myrtles), the patronal feast of their beloved church.

This year, we were blessed to travel to Dubbo and join the local Orthodox community in celebrating this special occasion.

It was a wonderful opportunity to come together in prayer, honour the Most Holy Theotokos, and share in the joy of our Orthodox faith and traditions.

Such celebrations remind us of the importance of unity, fellowship, and the strong spiritual bonds that connect our Orthodox parishes and communities across Australia.

We sincerely hope that next year, even more parishioners and friends from Sydney and other Greek Orthodox communities will join us on this special pilgrimage to Dubbo.

May the Most Holy Theotokos continue to protect and guide us all!

Perfect loukoumades don’t start with a great recipe — they start with a team that knows how to listen to one another!

Today’s training session in making traditional Greek loukoumades was about so much more than just cooking.

Our ladies shared their experience, learned to work together, adapt to one another, accept feedback, divide responsibilities, and work in harmony.

We prepare well in advance for our special church events. And when that important day arrives, it’s not just about preparing everything perfectly and on time. It’s also about staying focused, united, and understanding one another, even in the midst of a busy environment, large crowds, and unexpected challenges. That’s exactly what we were preparing for today!

The most valuable part of today wasn’t the perfectly made loukoumades — although they truly turned out amazing! It was seeing ladies of different ages, personalities, and life experiences come together as one team.

This kind of preparation gives us confidence that, at our upcoming event, we’ll be ready to handle unexpected situations and serve our very best loukoumades!

All glory to God for the opportunity to work together, learn from one another, and serve in unity!

With joyful hearts, we welcome two beautiful new icons to our church: the Holy Prophet and King David the Psalmist and St Alexandra of Russia.

King David, the sweet singer of Israel, has given the Church her prayer for thousands of years. His Psalms rise in our services every day, in joy and in sorrow, in repentance and in thanksgiving. May his icon remind us to lift our voices and our hearts to God in every season of life.

St Alexandra, the holy empress and passion-bearer, shows us that faith, love of family, and trust in God can stand firm even in the darkest hours. May she intercede for our families, for the suffering, and for all who carry heavy crosses.

These holy icons are windows into heaven. We invite you to come, light a candle, and bring your prayers before these friends of God.
