A family church for the whole community The Church on Tin Rd represents the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational denominations in Bromhof.

We are situated at 46 Tin Road Bromhof, Randburg, Johannesburg. People from many other denominations Catholic, Baptist, Dutch Reformed etc also worship with us on a Sunday.

There is no place for dishonest dealing by Christians; how much less place is there for dishonest dealing among Christians! Many have rejected the things of God and the fellowship of the saints because of dishonesty and cheating among Christians.

Peter's sermon shows that he was thoroughly recovered from his fall, and thoroughly restored to the Divine favour; for he who had denied Christ, now boldly confessed him. His account of the miraculous pouring forth of the Spirit, was designed to awaken the hearers to embrace the faith of Christ, and to join themselves to his church. It was the fulfilling the Scripture, and the fruit of Christ's resurrection and ascension, and proof of both. Though Peter was filled with the Holy Ghost, and spake with tongues as the Spirit gave him utterance, yet he did not think to set aside the Scriptures. Christ's scholars never learn above their Bible; and the Spirit is given, not to do away the Scriptures, but to enable us to understand, approve, and obey them. Assuredly none will escape the condemnation of the great day, except those who call upon the name of the Lord, in and through his Son Jesus Christ, as the Saviour of sinners, and the Judge of all mankind.

God saved us from the penalty of sin at Calvary. God continues to save us from the power of sin throughout our Christian life, and God is going to save us from the presence of sin when we stand before Him in glorified bodies, and it is all by grace.

In the Roman Empire, people typically prayed and offered grain to household idols for the good of the family. Each city had specific gods the people were expected to worship so the region would be blessed (Acts 19:28). The Empire had dozens of gods, including the emperor, all of whom needed to be placated. Beliefs on the resurrection of the dead depended on one's philosophical school. Only the Jews were authorized to worship an invisible God, and they were called "atheists" for doing so. But some philosophers were functional atheists, denying the existence of the supernatural but only in secret for fear of persecution.

With all these different worldviews, it's understandable the jailer would ask Paul and Silas how to be saved. They introduce him to the invisible Jewish God and the visible Jesus of Nazareth, Son of God, who died for the sins of the world, was resurrected, and now offers forgiveness to all who have faith to accept it. They explain how His offer is not because anyone deserves it—no one does—but because God has grace to save (Ephesians 2:8–9).

Once for All

Scripture Reading — Hebrews 7:23-28

He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.
— Hebrews 7:27

In the Old Testament God made a covenant with his people. That covenant included a system of sacrifices that pointed to the forgiveness of sins. But those sacrifices could not fully take away sin because, as Hebrews states later, “it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins” (Hebrews 10:4). Those sacrifices only pointed ahead to the one true sacrifice that was really needed: the shed blood of a perfect human being who could offer his own life in place of ours, and that person is Jesus Christ.

We could not pay for our own sins. The only way for us to be saved was for a sinless person to die willingly in our place, for our sake. And only Jesus Christ, who is fully God and fully human, could do that.

For a time, God established the role of priests to offer sacrifices for his people. The priests offered sacrifices from the people to God day after day as payment for sins. And once a year, the high priest would make atonement for everyone on the Day of Atonement.

But all of that ceremony pointed to the once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus, the great High Priest. As our text says, “He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.” Once for all. Sacrifices for sin are no longer needed. His sacrifice is enough for all. In Jesus all our sins are atoned for.

What can we do to pay for our sins? Nothing. Jesus gave the ultimate sacrifice, once for all.

The other appearances of the risen Lord to individuals on the day of Resurrection are narrated with much particularity, and at considerable length. John gives us the lovely account of our Lord’s conversation with Mary Magdalene, Luke gives us in full detail the story of the interview with the two travellers on the road to Emmaus.

Peter is in Caesarea Maritima, the Roman capital of Samaria and Judea, at the home of Cornelius, a Roman centurion who devoutly follows the Jewish God. An angel appeared to Cornelius and told him to send for Peter. As his messengers approached the house where Peter was staying, Jesus sent Peter a vision explaining that Gentiles were welcome to follow Him, as well. Peter went with the messengers and found a household of people ready to hear his testimony of Jesus (Acts 10:1–33).

Shadow Work

Scripture Reading — Hebrews 8:1-13

They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven.
— Hebrews 8:5

If you walk along a city street on a bright, sunny day, you will come across shadows. The shadows won’t really affect your walk. For example, you can walk through the shadow of a light pole because you know it is just a shadow of the pole. But it does make you aware that there is a light pole near you.

The priests that God ordained under the old covenant served in a tabernacle (and later a temple), that was like a shadow, or a copy, of what is in heaven, says Hebrews. That tabernacle and those priests were there in order to point to the real tabernacle in heaven and the real High Priest, Jesus Christ, who works on our behalf to save us from our sin and gives us new life forever with God.

Jesus represents the new covenant, and his work is far superior to that of the priests of the old covenant. Jesus is the real deal. Unfortunately, people got lost looking only at the shadow instead of looking to the real work of God in their lives and worshiping him as the only true God.

Jesus Christ came into the world so that we would no longer need the temple priests to intercede for us; he himself intercedes for us.

And he has made the perfect sacrifice, providing forgiveness of sins once and for all. Instead of looking at shadows, we are called to look to Jesus.

Paul adds two additional qualities about Christ in this verse. First, He calls Jesus "the beginning." This is most likely a reference to His role in creation (Genesis 1—2). In fact, in Hebrew, the book of Genesis is called Beresh*th, which is the first word of the text, and literally means "The Beginning." Second, Paul refers to Jesus as "the firstborn from the dead," a reference to His resurrection. Because Jesus rose from the dead, He is to be "preeminent." The Greek wording in this last phrase emphasizes Jesus as supreme in all things.
