Every Nation Faith City — Statement on Immigration
We call for peace, wisdom, dignity and respect for the rule of law.
In light of the ongoing public concern around immigration in South Africa, Every Nation Faith City offers the following statement to our congregation, community and wider society.
As followers of Jesus Christ, we believe that every person is created in the image of God and carries inherent worth and value. This includes South African citizens, foreign nationals, migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.
We recognise the real challenges facing our nation, including unemployment, crime, corruption and pressure on public services. We understand that many South Africans are frustrated and concerned. At the same time, we believe these complex challenges must never lead to scapegoating, intimidation, dehumanising or mistreatment of any group of people.
We affirm the importance of lawful immigration processes and the responsibility of our nation to manage its borders fairly, justly and transparently. We also recognise that many people come to South Africa because they are fleeing conflict, hardship, instability or danger, and are seeking safety and a better future for their families.
As a church, we reject xenophobia, prejudice, intimidation, vigilantism and violence in all their forms. Concerns about immigration must be raised through lawful, peaceful and constructive means.
We call on those in authority to act decisively against corruption, strengthen public safety and ensure that immigration and asylum systems are fair, efficient, transparent and humane. We call on all who live in South Africa, citizens and foreign nationals alike, to honour the laws of this land and to pursue peace.
We also call on our Every Nation Faith City family to be a people of prayer, truth, hospitality, reconciliation and practical love. Our response must reflect the heart of Christ, holding together justice and compassion, truth and love.
