Today, we gather to address a critical issue that affects us all, regardless of our backgrounds, cultures, or socioeconomic statuses. An issue that has been hidden in the shadows for far too long, but can no longer be ignored. I am, of course, talking about Gender-Based Violence.
GBV is a pandemic that has infected every corner of our society. It is a scourge that affects women, children, and men, leaving deep scars that can last a lifetime. It is a betrayal of trust, a violation of human rights, and a threat to our collective well-being.
We often talk about GBV in terms of statistics, and the numbers are indeed staggering. But behind every statistic, there is a face, a name, and a story. There is a mother, a daughter, a sister, or a friend who has been hurt, traumatized, or even killed.
GBV is not just a women's issue; it is a human issue. It is an issue that requires all of us to take responsibility, to speak out, and to act. We must create a society where everyone can live without fear of violence or abuse.
So, what can we do? First and foremost, we must believe survivors and support them in their journey towards healing and justice. We must also hold perpetrators accountable for their actions and ensure that they face the full force of the law.
We must educate ourselves and others about GBV, its causes, and its consequences. We must challenge patriarchal norms and stereotypes that perpetuate GBV. And we must work together to create a culture of respect, empathy, and inclusivity.
*To all survivors Gender-Based Violence, I see you, I hear you, and I believe you. Your strength and resilience in the face of diversity inspire me everyday.*
*To those who are still suffering in silence, please know that you are not alone. There is help available, and there are people who care about you and want to support you.*
*Let’s stand together against GBV and create a world where everyone can live without fear of violence and abuse.*
*If you or someone you know is experiencing GBV, please reach out to local support services or organizations that specialize in GBV support. You’re worth of love, care and respect.*
*To the perpetrators of GBV, I want to say that your actions are unacceptable, and that you will be held accountable. We will not tolerate GBV in our communities, and we will do everything in our power to prevent it.*
*As I conclude, let us make a commitment today to end GBV in all its forms. Let us work together to create a society that is just, equitable, and safe for all. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and future generations to make a difference.*
I thank you 🙏🏽
