On Labor Day, America celebrates the workers whose labor helped build its economy. For African Americans, that history stretches from enslaved agricultural labor in the 19th century to the industrial, agricultural, domestic, and professional workforce of the modern era.

Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, after workers had spent years campaigning for recognition, better wages, safer workplaces, and the eight-hour workday. By then, 30 states had already established Labor Day observances.

Black workers faced another barrier. Many established unions excluded them, prompting Black workers to create organizations of their own.

In 1869, Baltimore ship caulker Isaac Myers helped establish the Colored National Labor Union, one of the earliest national attempts to organize Black workers. Decades later, A. Philip Randolph founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, which became America’s most prominent Black labor union.

The story of American labor is also a story of Black workers who organized, negotiated, protested, and built despite exclusion.
Today, Labor Day belongs to every worker whose hands, skills, and determination have helped move America forward.

Do you know the story of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters?

In this historic 1930s photograph, A. Philip Randolph stands at the center among members of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, with Milton P. Webster identified beside him.

The Brotherhood became an important chapter in Black labor and civil-rights history. Black Pullman porters worked long hours serving railroad passengers while facing low wages, discrimination, and difficult working conditions. Organizing gave workers a collective voice to demand greater dignity and fairness.

Randolph understood something we can still learn from today:

Economic empowerment isn't only about earning money—it's also about having a voice in the conditions under which we work.

These men remind us that many workplace protections and opportunities enjoyed by later generations did not simply appear. People organized, sacrificed, negotiated, persisted, and refused to accept that unfair conditions had to remain permanent.

Their story challenges us today:

Know your history. Value your labor. Support workers. Build businesses. Strengthen Black institutions. Circulate our dollars. And never underestimate what can happen when people organize around a common purpose.

This Labor Day season, let us remember the Black men and women whose hands helped build America and whose courage helped change the American workplace.

We honor their labor.
We remember their struggle.
We continue building their legacy. 🖤❤️💚

🙏🏾🔥 PUSH — PRAY UNTIL SOMETHING HAPPENS!

Saint Luke Family, sometimes the answer doesn't come immediately. Sometimes the door doesn't open when we expect it to. Sometimes we pray today, tomorrow, and the next day—and it seems like nothing is changing.

But don't stop praying!

P.U.S.H. — Pray Until Something Happens! 🙏🏾

Pray when you're tired.
Pray when you don't understand.
Pray when the situation looks impossible.
Pray when you can't see any movement.
And when God answers—keep praying and give Him the praise! 🙌🏾

Philippians 4:6 reminds us to bring everything to God “by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving.”

Your prayer may be for your family, healing, finances, children, marriage, peace, direction, or a breakthrough you've been waiting on for years. Whatever you're carrying, keep bringing it before God.

Don't let the delay make you doubt what God can do.

This week, remember:

P — Pray 🙏🏾
U — Until
S — Something
H — Happens! 🔥

Keep the faith. Keep believing. Keep showing up. Keep PUSHING!

God hears you. God sees you. God is working—even when you can't see it yet. ❤️

Have a blessed and faith-filled month, Saint Luke Family!
