The California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection has approved new Zone Zero defensible space regulations to help reduce the risk of wildfire spreading to homes. Under the new rules, homes in wildfire-prone areas will be required to maintain a nonflammable five-foot buffer around structures. The regulations will be phased in over a five-year period for existing homeowners in wildfire-prone areas, with an emphasis on education over enforcement. Creating defensible space is an important part of preparing homes and communities for wildfire. Trinity County Fire Safe Council would like to remind you that we offer FREE home assessments conducted by local volunteer fire department members or Trinity County Resource Conservation District staff for Trinity County Residents. This in-depth home assessment provides recommendations and tips for creating defensible space, Firewise landscaping, home hardening, and/or emergency preparedness. The Fire Safe Council is not regulatory and will not share the results of your assessment.

Thank you to everyone who submitted a nomination for the 2026 Fire Safe Trinity Award. This award recognizes residents who reduce wildfire risk to their communities. The top nominees have been tabulated, and the Trinity County Fire Safe Council is now requesting your vote. Voting will close on August 26th. Gina Moon: President of the Willow Creek Fire Safe Council, active Firewise leader, and Neighborhood Ambassador for the Salyer/South Fork Road community.

Pat Frost: Founding member of the Trinity County Fire Safe Council, facilitator of the first Trinity County Community Wildfire Protection Plan, and active community leader for the North Lake area.

📢 Hey Post Mountain Residents! 📢

The Trinity County Fire Safe Council is hosting a pre- and post-fire emergency resources meeting! We'll cover topics for before, during, and after a wildfire affects your community, such as:

🏡 What you can do to harden your home and increase wildfire resilience
🚒 What you need in a go-bag, how to sign up for emergency alerts, and how to create an emergency action plan
🪾 What resources are available to recover from fire damage on your property and how to remove invasive species

Join us for an informative evening and get a free emergency go-bag! Meeting takes place on September 22 at 6:30 PM at the United Cultural Center (7186 CA-3 B, Hayfork, CA 96041)

Have you nominated someone yet? This award recognizes a community leader who has helped reduce wildfire risk in Trinity County! Submit your nominations this week, voting for nominees begins next Monday.

The Trinity County Fire Safe Council established the annual Fire Safe Trinity award in 2024. The award recognizes residents who reduce wildfire risk in their community. In 2025, the Fire Safe Council recognized Charlie Holthaus for his work as the Rush Creek Neighborhood Ambassador, leading multiple volunteer hazardous fuels reduction and pile burning events.

At our July monthly meeting last week, the group discussed improvements to the casting and voting system for our annual Fire Safe Trinity award. Council members decided that:

- The window for accepting nominations will be through August 14th (Nominate at FireSafeTrinity.org)
- Fire Safe Council members will vote between the top three individuals who received the most votes between August 17-26th
- The individual with the most votes will be announced at the August 27th regular TCFSC meeting.

It's been great to follow the progress that has gone into getting this camera put up at the monthly Fire Safe Council meetings. Excited to see the product of all the hard-work and for increased fire safety in the county!
