Friends, in case you missed it, an ashen cross traced on the parish priest's forehead by one of our parish's dedicated altar servers featured prominently on the front page of the Trinity Journal last week. Local reporter Francisco Martinezcuello wrote up a great article on Ash Wednesday at St. Patrick's, which can be found here: https://www.trinityjournal.com/news/local/article_689fb757-d193-43c8-9e3e-4514a784857d.html

May your Lent be blessed with the companionship of the Lord Jesus!

At 5:30 p.m. on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18, about 40 parishioners gathered inside St. Patrick Parish in Weaverville as the last of the snow stopped falling. Most sat in the back two rows of the pews, winter coats still on, as if ready to leave quickly if the weather turned again. A winter storm warning....

Lent is right around the corner! As we enter the desert with Christ to engage in spiritual combat, we take up the arms of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, seeking to conform ourselves to our Savior's pattern of life. We also start with a healthy memento of our mortality–ashes on our foreheads, and hunger in our stomachs. Here's our Lenten schedule (NB: the Ash Wednesday service at St. Gilbert's in Lewiston will be a Liturgy of the Word, not a Mass).

Stations of the Cross are a Lenten tradition that date back to St. Francis' day--800 years ago. Praying with Jesus on His sorrowful journey to Calvary is a beautiful way to sanctify this holy season! This year we’re reviving the practice of a potluck soup supper (meatless!) in Canterbury Hall after Stations are finished.

Friends, St. Patrick's Parish was recently featured in a Trinity Journal article about our Christmas Midnight Mass. Gratitude is due to reporter Francisco Martinezcuello for taking the time and thought to craft a good write-up. Also, it's worth saying that the pictures he captured to lend visual flair to the article are a credit to the dedicated team that decorated our church for Christmas, both inside and out!

Here's a link to the article:

An outdoor Nativity glowed like a beacon in the dark on the soaked grass in front of St. Patrick Parish late on Wednesday, Dec. 24. A brief break between rainstorms and flood watches allowed more than a dozen sleepy parishioners to walk from the parking lot toward the church, its facade trimmed with...

Blessed New Year to all! Friends, here's a short prayer for new beginnings:

"Almighty God, may everything we do begin with Your inspiration and continue with Your saving help. Let our work always find its origin in You and through You reach completion. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen"

Entering this new year, our task is to "work out [our] salvation with fear and trembling" (Phil 2:12), yet with the conviction of a living hope, because Heaven is worth any struggle, and God has promised to help us. Indeed, for those living in Christ, who persevere in His Body, the Church, "in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him Who has loved us" (Romans 8:37).

May you guard and grow the abiding life of His sanctifying grace in the midst of this year's upcoming struggles, everyday battles, and joys of year ahead, and may He bless your family with His peace!

Christ our newborn King is the Son of God. This simple fact means that the dear, holy young woman He chose from Nazareth becomes the mother of God. Join us in celebrating Mary's motherhood of the Divine Savior on this octave day of Christmas, which coincides with the new year. Vigil Masses are held the day prior (New Year's Eve).

May God bless you and your families!

With Christmas joy, this Sunday we honor the Holy Family. The Son of God entered the world in a family. He cares about your family, personally. He knows how good family life is, and won't refuse your prayer if you want your family to be a fitting preparation for Heaven. Let's turn to Jesus, Mary, and Joseph more readily today and every day, asking the blessings of God on our homes and on the hearts of all our closest family and relations.

May God bless your family as Christmas continues!
