This event will offer a chance to hear directly from one of the most influential climate voices of our time, ask questions, and reflect together on what this moment demands of us as a Jewish community.

Joshua Long in Thursday's The Baltimore Sun:
"As a parent, I worry about the infrastructure and energy demand for such a facility making our energy bills even worse; I worry about pollution of our local waterways with chemicals; I worry about noise and heat island effects further diminishing safe places for my children to play outdoors.
"And as a Christian and Unitarian Universalist, I am angry at the environmental injustice of proposing to place a data center in my neighborhood, a place where so many Black and immigrant families live." (Link and info about Thursday's public input meeting in the comments.)

We can't believe we have to say this, but the Montgomery County Green Bank is one of the best things about Montgomery County. We have only been able to help dozens of county houses of worship to save energy and go solar because of the Green Bank, and our congregations are counting on the Green Bank to enable them to comply with the building energy performance standards the council passed into law. No one, and certainly not Cm. Will Jawando, should be proposing budgets that zero out our beloved Green Bank. Why? On behalf of so many congregations working faithfully to shift to cleaner power: leave our green bank alone.

"The question of how we find our way in this moment, how we think about our place as people in a world in climate crisis, is fundamentally a moral and spiritual question. It is a question that belongs right here, in this pulpit and in every sacred sanctuary. That is one of the most abiding memories I have of Lavona Grow [of blessed memory], of the clarity with which she asked everyone, up to and including Virginia’s US senators – to understand that a commitment to honoring and protecting the interdependent web of existence was a matter of religious conviction for her and for this community, a core principle of Unitarian Universalist faith."

Guided by faith and care for our common home, across Maryland we raised our voices to hold the biggest polluters accountable. Our leaders testified and advocated in Annapolis to pass HB 128, a critical study of the harm climate polluters cause to all of us. Though vetoed at first, today we celebrate the override of the RENEW Act veto and commit ourselves to the work of justice and repair ahead!
