Weekend praises

These words remind us that every reason to praise God is rooted in who He is and what He has done. His promises never fail, His salvation is sure, and His name is worthy of praise from all creation. May our hearts join that chorus today with gratitude, confidence, and joyful worship.

THE STORY BEHIND "COME THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING"

Few hymns capture the wonder of God's grace as beautifully as Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing. Written in 1758 by Robert Robinson (1735–1790), this timeless hymn has encouraged Christians for more than two and a half centuries to remember God's faithfulness and rely on His grace.

Robert Robinson was far from God during his youth. At the age of 17, he listened to a powerful sermon preached by the renowned evangelist George Whitefield. Though he initially resisted the message, the Holy Spirit continued to work in his heart, and after months of conviction, Robinson gave his life to Christ. Filled with gratitude for the grace that had transformed him, he wrote Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing at just 22 years old.

The hymn opens with a heartfelt prayer:

"Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace."

These words acknowledge God as the source of every blessing and ask Him to prepare the believer's heart for continual praise.

One of the hymn's most intriguing lines is:

'Here I raise mine Ebenezer."

This phrase comes from 1 Samuel 7:12, where the prophet Samuel erected a memorial stone after God delivered Israel from the Philistines. He called it Ebenezer, meaning "Stone of Help," declaring, "Thus far hath the Lord helped us." Robinson used this biblical image as a testimony that God had faithfully guided and sustained him.

Another deeply personal verse has resonated with generations of Christians:

"Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love."

These words honestly express the believer's struggle with a wandering heart while pointing to the need for God's preserving grace. It is this combination of humility, honesty, and confidence in God's mercy that has made the hymn so enduring.

Today, Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing remains one of the most cherished hymns in Christian worship. Its message reminds believers that every blessing comes from God, that His grace is sufficient for every need, and that He remains faithful to those who trust in Him.

"Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood."

That is the enduring message of this beloved hymn: the God who saves is also the God who keeps.

If salvation could truly be lost, then our confidence would ultimately rest in ourselves rather than in Christ. But Scripture teaches that salvation is God's work from beginning to end. The Holy Spirit seals believers (Ephesians 1:13–14), Christ's righteousness is credited to all who believe (2 Corinthians 5:21), and eternal life is exactly that—**eternal** (John 10:28). The believer's assurance is grounded not in human faithfulness but in God's unfailing promises.

To say that a true believer can finally perish raises serious questions about the sufficiency of Christ's atoning work and the certainty of God's covenant promises. Jesus declared, *"It is finished"* (John 19:30), signifying that redemption was fully accomplished. Those whom the Father has given to the Son will never be cast out (John 6:37), and nothing can separate God's children from His love in Christ (Romans 8:38–39).

This does not encourage careless living. Rather, the assurance of salvation produces gratitude, holiness, and perseverance. True believers endure because God preserves them (Philippians 1:6; 1 Peter 1:5). Our confidence is not in our ability to hold on to Christ, but in Christ's power to hold on to us.

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone sn**ch them out of My hand. John 10:27–28

The Christian life is not a choice between glorifying God and enjoying Him.

Our chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

That small word matters.

God is not most honored by joyless obedience, cold duty, or a faith that treats holiness as mere misery. He is glorified when His people know Him as their highest good, receive His gifts with gratitude, delight in His Word, worship Him with gladness, and rest in Christ as their greatest treasure.

We do not enjoy God instead of obeying Him. We enjoy Him through faithful obedience.

We do not glorify God by pretending the Christian life contains no sorrow. We glorify Him when, even through sorrow, we confess that His mercy is better than life and that no earthly loss can separate us from Christ.

The world offers pleasures that fade and promises that cannot keep us. God offers Himself.

To know Him is life.
To worship Him is freedom.
To walk with Him is joy.
To belong to Him is our everlasting good.

Glorify God—and enjoy Him forever.
