Wednesday Sunrise
Good Wednesday morning Bascom family and friends! What a great day we have in the making.
Last night, as I was coming home from our Trail Life meeting, The moon was coming up behind some clouds and world was illuminated so clearly. What a beautiful sight. I tried to take a picture, but the moon was so bright that the picture wasn’t all that sharp.

As I marveled at the intensity of the moon rising you couldn’t help but be in awe of all that God provides us. God provides so much yet His expectations of us are few and simple. Not that they are easy for us to satisfy because of our human emotions and human nature.

I think forgiveness is the most challenging thing Jesus commands us to do. I have tried to argue with God about forgiveness and whether someone “deserves” mercy.

Scripture can be so annoying sometimes. Paul threw down an incredible statement to the Ephesian church.
Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
(Ephesians 4:32, NLT)

That is a very tall order and one that is impossible to do without remembering how much I have been forgiven. If you say something nasty about me and ask for forgiveness, I will almost certainly grant it. If you do it again and ask forgiveness, I will probably forgive you. If you do the same thing again and ask forgiveness, I will most likely respond ungraciously and ask you to “prove” you are sorry.

Yet that illustration is exactly what I do in my relationship with God every day. I have asked Him to forgive the same sin dozens, even hundreds of times. Still His Word tells me I am forgiven and He loves me just the same as the first time I confessed that sin. That is how God has forgiven me through Christ. I should respond accordingly, forgiving each and every offense out of profound gratitude. Do you see any way around the obvious command to forgive? Me either.

Bottom line: we are commanded to forgive as we have been forgiven. Forgiveness may well be the missing ingredient to the healing of most relationships. Forgive the one who wounded you. Forgive yourself and seek forgiveness if you are the one who wounded. Perhaps your efforts will not result in reconciliation. That is sad but ultimately okay. What if the other person does not deserve to be forgiven? Consider Jesus as He looked down in agony from the cross.

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice. (Luke 23:34, NLT)

I can say with complete confidence that I have not endured the level of wounds, betrayal, mocking, and abuse that Jesus experienced. Yet He could look at those evil perpetrators and ask His Father to forgive them. That gives me some perspective. Perhaps my situations are forgivable, with His help and only with His help.

I have spent a lot of unhappy moments not enjoying the freedom the Lord intended because I did not want to forgive someone who hurt me. I grieve to think of how I have stubbornly refused to forgive others for real and/or perceived slights over the years. I can imagine Jesus looking at me with sadness (not condemnation) because I have not fully comprehended the magnitude of the debt that has been erased from my account because of Him. I can hear Him saying,

“When you choose to hold onto bitterness, you shortchange yourself on joy and peace.”

If I cannot forgive, I have forgotten or never comprehended how much I have been forgiven.

How quickly I forget. I forget how much I have been forgiven. I forget how much I am loved by Jesus. I forget that I am a brand new creation. I forget I am righteous because of the finished work of Christ. I forget that there is no condemnation in Christ. I forget that I am a beloved child of God and He is for me. I forget that He has my back and He has me in His hand forever. I am forgetful.
But thank God He does not forget His promises. More than anything I need to remember that today.

Last Saturday our Girls of Grace got together for a brunch and Fall celebration! Food was delicious! Devotional about Fall with a discussion and finished with a fun group Family Feud game!

Monday Morning Forecast

Good morning, Bascom family and friends! We once again begin a new week with new opportunities and experiences.

I was thinking about the past few Sundays and the message that we have tried to share. I have had Colossians 1: 9 on my mind lately.

9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives.

It expresses Paul’s continual prayer that the believers in Colossae be filled with the knowledge of God’s will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. This is my prayer for all of you.

This scripture has been the foundation of our message for the past few weeks. The other day in Bible study we were talking about this church family. How the compassion that we hold for each other binds us together.

This verse stands as a foundational reminder of the Christian call to persistent prayer and spiritual growth. I have personally felt the power of your prayers. I have been so blessed to be a part of this church family.

I know that each of us has trials and distractions that sometimes seem overwhelming. However, do you face 15,000 problems? Before you count yourself out, turn and look at the One standing next to you. Christ can help you do the impossible. You simply need to give him what you have and watch him work. “Climb on”.

John 6:11 says, “Jesus took the loaves.” This is the story of the day that Jesus fed the 5,000 men plus women and children. He didn’t have to use the loaves. He made manna fall for the Israelites. Instead, he chose to use the single basket of the small boy.

What’s in your basket? All you have is a wimpy prayer, give it. All you have is a meager skill, use it. All you have is the strength for one step, take it. God used three nails and a crude cross to redeem humanity. If God can turn a basket into a buffet, don’t you think he can do something with your five loaves and two fishes of faith? Remember, you are never alone.

May God’s grace be with you all this week!

Friday Fixin’s

Good morning, Bascom family and friends. I hope that everyone has had a great week this week.

I know that the cooler temperatures have sure been enjoyable. It is fast approaching the time of year when we gather with friends around a campfire, we spend time sitting alone in the woods, we are observant of God’s creation, and we experience the tranquility of turning loose the rush of our everyday grind.

Yesterday evening I walked down to the shop and closed things up for the night. As I was heading back to the house, a young screech owl had landed on the railing of my deck. I stood and watched it as it was watching me. It didn’t fly away in fear, and we had a moment of conversation. Not in words, but in admiration.

We are all God’s creation, and we each possess the ability to watch in wonder the magnificence of the diversity of all living things.
As I stood there, in a one-sided conversation with this little owl, I remembered a group of Rocky Mountain sheep I observed bedded in a high meadow, a herd of Mule Deer that walked through a mountain camp as we slept, and so many other moments that flooded my memory with the grandeur of life.

If you are like me, sometimes the rush of the world holds our attention and focus captive. When we remember moments of peace and wonder at the world that God created, we can turn loose the anxious moments that overwhelm us daily.

As I was leaving the little owl, and heading to the house, I thought of John 14:27:

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

God gives us those memories, those moments when we find peace and tranquility. These words of Jesus were to His disciples as He was preparing them for His leaving. As you focus on Jesus, let your heart and mind experience the peace that only faith can bring.

Wednesday Sunrise

Good Wednesday morning Bascom family and friends. Here we are halfway through the week, and I was preparing for Bible study this evening. What we have been studying is to know why we believe what we believe. The study takes us from Genesis through Revelation with scriptural support from the Word of God to assure us of God’s truth.

As we are approaching the gifts of the spirit it has given me food for thought.

Several years ago, as teachers at the beginning of a school year, we had a speaker that had one message to share. It was simple, yet all encompassing. “I can do that”.
Her entire varied career was focused on not whether she was trained to do a particular job, but regardless of her knowledge, her attitude was, “I can do that”.

We are each given talents, gifts, and abilities by the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Each week I observe so many of the Spirit’s “fruits” in our church family. My questions this morning are: What do you see and feel is your gift? How do you use your gift in service to God’s kingdom?

Paul is explaining that the Spirit gives different gifts to different people, but the purpose is the same: to build up Christ’s body. Every believer has at least one gift to use for God’s glory.
Every believer has been given gifts by the Spirit.

You may not have discovered yours yet, but they are there. As you study God’s word, ask that your gifts be revealed. Every member of Christ body, the church, has a function, you are essential, even if you don’t see it yet. Don’t compare your gifts to others, use what God gave you faithfully. As you discover your gift, do so with the attitude of “I can do that”.

1 Corinthians 12: 4-6
There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences in ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but the same God who works all in all.

Monday Morning Forecast

What a great service we had together yesterday morning. It was good being together as we worshiped God. The gist of the scripture we read from Psalm 119: 105 was the Word of God is the lamp light that guides us along our path in life.

I got going this morning and as I was getting that first cup of coffee down, I looked through the daily devotionals I get each morning. The devotional this morning just emphasized the point of what we were talking about Sunday. I wanted to share that with you.

Sometimes a dream comes without a shape.
Small desires.
Passing thoughts.
You act on what you have, trusting God with the specifics you cannot yet see. One step gives way to another. The story takes shape as you live it.

We’re all given different gifts. One person's dream may never make sense to another. We can love each other without sharing the same assignment. And we can honor the work of someone’s hands without needing to make it our own.

What requires extraordinary focus may, for a season, require exactly that. What appears all-consuming from the outside doesn’t necessarily mean someone has misunderstood their assignment. We may be witnessing the effort it takes to establish something before we can see what it will become.

Let it encourage us to follow our dreams—to begin, without knowing the whole story, and trust God with what grows.

We’ve each been given talents to put to work, each contributing to something far greater than any of us can see from where we stand. We’re invited to be partners in the work and heirs of the promise.
So, if you’re quietly tending something you believe God has given you to do, take courage.

You don’t have to explain every part of it to everyone. Let the fruit encourage those who need it. Let someone find courage in watching you remain faithful.

Keep your eyes on what God has placed before you. Go forward, strong and courageous.

Trust. Wait. Work. Love.

Friday Fixin’s

Good Friday morning Bascom family and friends! Once again, I am seemingly making a habit of being late in getting this post out. Is it Sunday yet? I look forward to being together in worship together.

Last night was a rough night – sometimes the days take too much out of you and you have a night that just won’t end.

I was thinking about how many people are up and roaming the halls, wishing they could get back to sleep. What a great time to have a quiet moment with God. It is amazing how spending time in God’s word settles you down and you can peacefully go back to bed to get the rest you need.

Psalm 63: 6-7
6 When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches.
7 Because You have been my help,
Therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.

How can we find moments to know God more fully? We don’t have to wait for a sleepless night, of course. Jesus left His companions to spend time talking alone with His Father (Mark 1:35).

The Scriptures say, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). And David’s poetry often reveals how he sought out an intimate relationship with God to praise Him for who He is (Psalm 63:1-8).

The world is loud, and we’re often distracted by the noise. It claims our attention and demands our participation. That’s why we need to actively seek out the quiet moments rarely found in the chaos of family life or the busyness of work.

We find God in the stillness. He’s awake. He’s listening. And He’s always ready to spend time with those who seek Him.

Wednesday Sunrise

Good Wednesday morning Bascom family and friends! I am running late to get this post out this morning.

As I was getting that first cup of coffee going this morning, I was outside greeting the day. I noticed that the world was changing. After a period of drought that dulled the grass and withered the leaves on the trees there was fresh growth and things were greening up. It is amazing what a little rain will do to bring life back into the earth.

I was thinking that our lives are nothing more than a reflection of what we observe. Our lives too can become withered and dull. When we experience a “drought” in life, for whatever reason, we need a good dose of “Living Water” to quench our thirst and restore our faith and trust.

John 7: 37-39
Jesus Promises Living Water
37 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! 38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’”[a] 39 (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given,[b] because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)

It won’t be long until the season changes our world. The leaves will fall and the grass will once again go dormant. All of creation will pause as winter approaches. We are blessed in that we can continue to flourish regardless of the “seasons” of our lives.

The word of God provides us trust and guidance, strength to face our daily challenges, the ability to live with purpose in obedience to God’s word, and encouragement for all those everyday moments.
I hope each of you experience the renewal of “living water” as you study God’s word and grow in faith as you place your trust in God’s provision.
