We were fortunate to have Phyllis as part of our Connect family. She brought us much joy and laughter with her musical talents and witty sense of humor. She will be greatly missed. A brief graveside service will be held on Friday, November 6 at 2 pm at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, Alabama. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 7 at 11 am at Christ Episcopal Church in downtown Tuscaloosa. Reception to follow.

Fall Frenzy is upon us at Connect! 🍎🍁🍂🌰 Lots of apple activities including apple c***r tasting, apple stacking and co****le with apples! We also ate some yummy apple pie! Toni led us in the painting of gorgeous fall leaves and it was also her birthday and then we learned it was Jenny’s birthday, too! Sara stopped by with her sweet pup, Jovie, for a visit and Kirsten brought her bells and beautiful music for us.

Part 2 of Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day - We started each day with a gelato snack since Italy was the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. We had a lot of speakers across both days! Nick spoke to us about his visit to the home of Christopher Columbus in Italy. Since Spain played an integral role in the story of Columbus, Gina shared her Spanish family heritage and pictures of her Spanish mantilla (a family heirloom) she wore on her wedding day. Mary Louise brought a beautiful book about Barcelona and told us about some of the places she visited in Spain. Kenric shared his expertise on the indigenous peoples of Alabama. Pat brought a Native American drum to show us and Lisa H. brought some beautiful jewelry made by tribes in the American Southwest. Also, a local family shared their collection of arrowheads and other artifacts found on their property here in Tuscaloosa County. We did a variety of art including sand art, inspired by the Navajo tribe. We also made beaded jewelry and did a little drumming which are both popular in many indigenous cultures.

Connect supports people living with memory loss through art, music, movement, and activities that engage the mind. 💫

Meeting Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 AM at Christ Church, Connect also gives caregivers a few hours of respite each week. A caregiver support group meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. 🤝

Through moments of creativity, companionship, and care, Connect brings encouragement to individuals and families navigating memory loss. 💡

Day two of our belated Labor Day celebration included more job stories from our friends and volunteers, bells with Kirsten and movement with Jada! A fun day and so interesting to hear about everyone’s professions! 👏🏻👏🏻👨‍⚕️👩‍🔧👨‍⚖️👩‍🏫👨‍💼

We celebrated American workers last week with a belated Labor Day theme. We enjoyed reminiscing with our friends and volunteers and learning about their jobs. Some even brought items related to their professions to share with us. We were also able to squeeze in a little time at the end of day one for a game with the conversation ball and some work-related songs. Stay tuned for day two!

Big Al visited Connect last week and he cheered, danced and even did art with us! We invited some of our preschool friends to join us as well. There were several successful attempts to ring the field goal post and we threw the football a lot! Thank you to Jim Brooks for arranging the visit with University of Alabama Athletics Big Al and thank you to Toni Thompson for providing the artwork. Roll Tide!! ❤️🐘🏈🅰️
