Boneyard Safari was following Tim’s trip. Despite its early end, the site shares our feelings that we are “profoundly grateful that pilot Tim Tarris survived and is in good spirits.” Tim expects to be released this week from a Colorado Springs hospital and flown home.

Update: Sadly, there was a mishap on the lower 48 state journey for Tim Tarris in Lamar, CO on June 10th.

While a recent mishap brought an unexpected end to this chapter of the journey, we are profoundly grateful that pilot Tim Tarris survived and is in good spirits. Also, thank you to the first responders and airport personnel there in Lamar that came to the aid of Tim and Thunder Jenny.

Please keep Tim, his family, and everyone involved in your thoughts as they move forward. We look forward to seeing this remarkable spirit of aviation continue to educate and inspire future generations.

Tim Tarris' flight around the lower 48 states came to an early end Wednesday afternoon when his replica World War I biplane crashed while landing at an airport at Lamar in southeastern Colorado.

Tim was seriously hurt, taken to a local hospital, then airlifted to a level 1 trauma center in Colorado Springs. His daughter, Lisa Tarris Hubele, posted on Facebook that rescuers said he was "confused" when they got to him but awake enough to give them her telephone number. "He was taken to the small regional hospital and found to have a small brain bleed, multiple rib fractures, a lumbar compression fracture, and a broken right tibia," she said. "He has not needed any surgery and will hopefully be discharged to inpatient rehab in the next few days. Given his age and how bad this could have been, he has done miraculously well!"

Lisa's husband, Conrad, flew Vicky to Colorado Springs where she has been with Tim. Vicky said Saturday rehab is the "next step" and they'll likely be in Colorado Springs for a while. She is staying with friends.

A retired Air Force colonel whose experience included as a trainer, Tim was flying a three-quarters scale "Jenny" he built from a kit. The Jenny was used for training in World War I and became popular after the war for commercial and recreational flying. He took off from Marana Airport at 5:29 a.m. June 1 on what was to be a series of flights around the country, a trip he estimated would take 22 flying days plus contingencies for delays. A week and a half into the trip he had made it to most western states including California, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, Wyoming, Montana and Colorado. The plan was to end at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia to mark the 100th anniversary of the Army Air Corps and to celebrate the country's 250th birthday.

Tim's daughter posted that he does not recall what happened. "He says he remembers being on final approach at Lamar and nothing after that. I don’t really think it was a medical issue that caused him to crash since it looks like he almost made the landing," she wrote. The Lamar airport has video of the crash but she cannot post it due to the FAA investigation.

After flying Vicky to Colorado Springs, Conrad flew to Lamar to check on the biplane. "She is definitely done for but held up remarkably well and did her job of mostly protecting Dad!," Lisa wrote.

Continue to keep Tim in your prayers for his recovery and the family as they deal with the trauma of the crash as well as the passing of Vicky's sister.

Mercy, not sacrifice
Letter from Pastor Jeff

Dear Beautiful Savior,

There is a rabbinic story that came to me this week. A student once asked his Rabbi, "How do we know when night has ended and day has begun?" One student answered, "When you can look into the distance and tell the difference between a sheep and a dog." Another answered, "When you can distinguish a fig tree from an olive tree." "No,” he said. "Day begins when you can look into the face of another human being and recognize your sister or your brother. Until then, it is still night."

This week’s Gospel lesson is from St. Matthew. Jesus calls a tax collector and is seen eating with him and other sinners who the Pharisees didn't like. Jesus reminds us that he desires mercy, not sacrifice. Jesus has come to call sinners not the righteous. Our world continues to love the night, not being able to discern the face of another human being.
