The Grand Canyon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has scheduled a symposium on Christian Nationalism. The event will be 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at American Lutheran Church in Sun City. Attend in person or online. Registration is $25.

Organizers say the symposium will explore:

* What Christian Nationalism is and what it is not
* What Scripture and the teachings of Jesus say about faith, nation, power, and citizenship
* How we can respond with hope rather than fear, courage rather than division, and community rather than exclusion
* What it means to follow Jesus faithfully "for such a time as this"

Guest speaker is Bishop Shelley Bryan Wee, Bishop of the Northwest Washington Synod of the ELCA.

Happy 100th US Army Air Corps!

Beautiful Savior member Tim Tarris will speak next month on the centennial of the United States Army Air Corps.

The retired U.S. Air Force Colonel from Oro Valley had a 30-year career flying jet fighters, later serving another 27 years in airlines as a reservist.

The United States Army Air Corps was the aerial warfare branch of the U.S. Army from 1926 to 1941, serving as the precursor to the U.S. Army Air Forces and ultimately the U.S. Air Force. It was established July 2, 1926, as a redesignation of the earlier United States Army Air Service, reflecting the growing importance of aviation in modern warfare while remaining part of the Army structure.

To honor the USAAC centennial, Tarris in 2025 decided to construct a three-fourths scale JN-4 "Jenny" aircraft from a kit. The plan was to make a commemorative flight across the United States.

He took off early June 1 from a small airport outside of Tucson for what was to be a nearly month-long journey. Unfortunately, with 10 states and 24 legs accomplished, the trip came to an end in Colorado when high winds contributed to a landing accident and loss of the aircraft. Tim was injured but is making a full recovery.

He is writing a book about the adventure tentatively titled "Jenny and Me." The motto for the trip was “Honor the past, celebrate the present and embrace the future.” The trip is being completed on the road with stops at the original destinations.

Tim's presentation is planned for 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 7570 N. Thornydale Road. All are welcome.

Beautiful Savior members Stan Thorud and Kathy Carter celebrated their love and respect for each other during a service of commitment performed Saturday evening by Pastor Annemarie Burke. The ceremony, attended by approximately 60 friends, neighbors and fellow Beautiful Savior worshippers, was held at the Elks Club in Tucson.

Master artist Stan Thorud is offering his Beginners’ Acrylic Painting Class again this fall. It will start from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Sept. 8 in the Luther Room. Read more on the church web site here.
