The readings for the second Sunday after Pentecost explore journeys made by faith and the One who can be trusted on those ways. In Genesis, Abram and Sarai set out from land and relationships that are known for the sake of promises yet to be. The psalm praises the God whose justice and steadfast love form the basis for trust in God. Paul uses the journey of Abraham made by trust to show the gospel’s promise comes through faith and not law. In Matthew, Jesus takes a pair of journeys. The first results in discipleship’s call. The second leads to the healing of a child, after taking time on the way to heal a woman. Grace abounds all along the way.

The readings for Trinity Sunday offer perspectives into the One the Church has come to call the Trinity. Genesis tells the story of God speaking creation into being. In it, human creation is prefaced by God’s “let us make humans in our image.” Proverbs sings of the person and role of Wisdom in God’s work of creation. Paul links an appeal for church unity with an oft-used benediction invoking the Trinity. The gospel of John opens with the mystery of the Word who was with God and was God “in the beginning.”

The readings for Pentecost celebrate the workings of God’s Spirit in community and creation. The psalm rejoices in Spirit’s breathing life into all creation. Acts 2 narrates the Spirit’s gift on the day of Pentecost. Paul reflects on how individual gifts of Spirit build up and refresh the Church. In John, Jesus journeys to Jerusalem for the harvest festival known as Booths. John interprets Jesus’ words about “living water” in relationship to the future gift of God’s Spirit.

On Sunday, we welcomed Adrián González from Café Justo (Just Coffee) during (when else?) our Coffee Hour to talk about the mission of Café Justo. We learned about their wonderful coffee from our friends at St. Mark's and have been serving Cafe Justo beans for over a year.

It was fascinating to learn about the history and present of this grower-owned coffee cooperative. Café Justo began with a $20,000 loan and now supports over 100 families who are able to stay, live, and thrive on their family-owned coffee farms in Chiapas, Mexico.

Christ breaks down the walls and hostilities that divide us (Ephesians 2:14). As Christ followers, we must build longer tables and deeper relationships, not higher walls.

It was a wonderful morning of conversation and coffee with Adrián and his family, learning about coffee, migration, and life in the Borderlands.

Does your congregation serve coffee? Check out CaféJusto - they ship to all 50 states and Canada. This delicious coffee directly supports the growers with living prices and benefits.

¡Muy delicioso!

The readings for the seventh Sunday of Easter revolve around times of farewell and stress. How can we live faithfully in the midst of them with hope, and with love? In the book of Acts, the Ascension of Jesus is coupled with the promise of God’s Spirit soon to come. The psalmist celebrates the God who both reigns on high while paying heed and taking care of those who dwell below. The first epistle of Peter brings assurance of God’s steadying presence and hope in trying times. In John, Jesus prays to God for the disciples, that love and unity may still provide the ties that bind us.

The readings for the sixth Sunday of Easter are something of a hodge-podge. The psalm opens and closes by blessing the God who has listened to the psalmist’s prayer for help. Paul’s preaching adopts a philosophical tone in Athens when he speaks at a place known for its oratory. First Peter opens with advice for facing opposition. It closes with a curious verse about Jesus’ activity between death and resurrection. The gospel of John links a command and a promise. The command is to love Jesus by keeping his commandments. The promise is an Advocate, the Spirit of truth, who will abide with us. Through love and Spirit, we are united in Christ to God.

The readings for the fifth Sunday of Easter provide words of challenge and comfort for the practice of faith in the days given to us. The psalmist bequeaths to persons and communities a primal word of trust: “My times are in God’s hands.” In the book of Acts, a faithful servant entrusts self to God and extends forgiveness even in the face of death. 1 Peter celebrates God’s transforming mercy that creates community anchored in Christ. In John’s gospel, Jesus prepares disciples for his coming departure. For them, for us, a place is prepared and reunion is promised.

The readings for the fourth Sunday of Easter affirm God’s trust-worthy keeping of those who entrust themselves to that care. Psalm 23 assures God’s shepherding whether we stand in places of danger or peace. The book of Acts testifies to the Spirit’s creating a community where our common life and faith are shared for the sake of meeting human need. The letter of 1 Peter promises God will shepherd us in times of suffering. This includes when we suffer for doing what is good. The gospel of John relates Jesus’ parable-like teaching of the sheepfold. In it, the gatekeeper and the shepherd are those who can be trusted by the flock.

The readings for the third Sunday of Easter carry the news of God raising Jesus back and forth across time for the sake of opening faith. In Acts, the sermon of Peter on Pentecost recalls God’s raising of Jesus to form new community. The psalmist looks back on an experience of God’s deliverance to shape how life will be lived moving forward. The letter of Peter anchors the church in steady hope grounded in God’s raising of Jesus. In Luke, two disciples set out on a road trip. A stranger joins them. Words are exchanged on the way that enlighten. But only in the breaking of bread are eyes and faith opened to the Risen Christ in their midst.
