The readings for this inaugural Creation in Christ Sunday celebrate God’s hand and purposes in creation. Ezekiel envisions the river of life-giving water that flows from God. The psalm summons all creation to praise God. Paul witnesses to the God who is Creator of all. The Gospel of John testifies to the Word, identified in later verses as Christ, who with God brings all life into being and light into darkness.

Join us tomorrow for the Feast of Creation in Christ!

+We’ll explore how we can better understand our place in God’s good creation, honoring God as Creator, Creating, and Creativity+

“Then (the angel) brought me back to the entrance of the temple; there water was flowing from below the entryway of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east), and the water was flowing down from below the south side of the temple, south of the altar…Wherever the river goes, every living creature that swarms will live, and there will be very many fish once these waters reach there. It will become fresh, and everything will live where the river goes. People will stand fishing beside the sea from En-gedi to En-eglaim; it will be a place for the spreading of nets; its fish will be of a great many kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea. But its swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they are to be left for salt. On the banks, on both sides of the river, there will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither nor their fruit fail, but they will bear fresh fruit every month, because the water for them flows from the sanctuary. From Pastor Amalia:

I want a version of the image below as a broken heart. As a person who is part of the LGBTQ+ community, bars just like Venture-N were a place of welcome and belonging during my coming out journey.

I am keeping in prayer and care the victims of Monday's shooting at the Venture N, a neighborhood gay bar that is less than two miles from us. As a congregation that is LGBTQ+ welcoming and affirming and led by members of the LGBTQ+ community, we grieve for all who are impacted.

I keep going back to part of the reading from this past Sunday from Paul's letter to the church in Rome: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).

To all in our congregation and community who are grieving, frightened, angry, and overcome, I hear you and join you.

Too often, the Christian church has been the source of harm to the LGBTQ+ community. Our public witness and collective action as Christians who affirm and celebrate LGBTQ+ is vital. Together, may we overcome evil with good.

Following worship tomorrow, we will offer another showing of “ A Time For Burning.” This documentary is 60 years old this year and continues to be a teaching tool for addressing the history and prevalence of racism in the church. The film is 58 minutes, followed by a guided discussion. Led by our Reconciling in Christ team as we learn, pray, and act into unlearning racism and becoming an anti-racist community.

The readings for the fourteenth Sunday in Pentecost reveal God and Jesus in startling ways. In doing so, those same readings reveal what following such a God and Messiah seeks of us. In Exodus, we encounter the call of Moses and the Mystery of who God is. The psalm sings of the ways and ones through whom God works for the called community. Paul offers a checklist of callings and priorities for Christian living and community. And we hear for the first time in Matthew the word of Jesus’ Passion and Cross, and with it the call to cruciform discipleship.

Last week, Interfaith Community Services, of which Our Saviour's is a congregational partner, gathered faith leaders for connection and a very good conversation about AI and faith communities. We met at Kol-Ami Synagogue.

The readings for the thirteenth Sunday in Pentecost witness to God’s transforming grace at work, even in words and ones hidden for the moment. Exodus opens with the courage of two midwives and a child drawn out of the water. The psalm begins with a “call and response” that summons praise for God’s life-saving help. Paul writes of the diversity of gifts that God blends to make the Church One Body in Christ. In Matthew, Jesus asks the disciples a question about his identity. Curiously, when an answer is given, Jesus orders them not to tell anyone.

The readings for the twelfth Sunday in Pentecost share the theme of reunion. Joseph reunites with long-estranged brothers. The psalm celebrates the richness of living in unity. Paul asserts how God’s mercy restores relationships. In Matthew, Jesus encounters a woman who is an outsider to Israel and whose daughter is in need of healing. The woman persists in cries for help in the face of indifference and hostility. Jesus finally commends her faith and heals her child.
