Spiritual Narcissism
There is a lot of spiritual narcissism within the body of Christ. A Narcissistic person has an inordinate fascination with oneself. It’s an all about me attitude. It does not have any love or compassion for anyone else, or their needs. But spends each day thinking only about “me.” It will walk past the opportunity to release a word of hope, pray for another’s need, meet a need, or turn a deaf ear to a cry for help.
Spiritual narcissism in leadership, is an attitude or vanity about ones own ministry not the ministry of Jesus. It will not help another on their journey, or in their calling of God. It is a spirit without any concern, resources, or time to invest in their brother. We are called to be a body fitly joined together, supplying needs to others. This kingdom principle will never change!
This spirit is also afraid someone will get ahead of it and it will contend to be the best showman in its field. It is a competitive spirit and it will not serve anyone or serve anywhere.
The real calling of Jesus will always be about surrender, sacrifice, obedience and giving. It will also have a foundation of love and compassion. It’s focus will always be the reconciliation and restoration of souls. This calling has an outward expression of the passion of Christ in good fruit and works of love. I find personally, as I give sacrificially, the Lord always gives back to me. He is faithful to His laborers!
Be careful that you are not so self absorbed that you cannot see the opportunities around you to show love and kindness. If you struggle having friendships it could be that you have made your relationships all about you! Others need to feel loved and valued too.
*Do your conversations always revolve around your personal problems?
*Do you talk more than listen to those in your circle?
*Do you serve others or only want others to serve you?
*Do you consider someone elses opinion or you believe yours is always right?
One must be intentional to change toxic behavior or it can become a familiar spirit that produces no healthy life. We all were called to be a life giver not a taker only.
Don’t resist Holy Spirit as He speaks to you. Jesus is calling His laborers of love to advance! However small you may think the act is, it is important to Him and it can produce a spiritual chain reaction that impacts ones eternity. So today consider those around you and ask the Lord to open your heart to see as He does.
The Word of God warned of what it would be like today.
“For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.”
— 2 Timothy 3:2-5
The antidote is this,
“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.”
— Ephesians 5:1-2
