Murray-Weigel Hall is a U- shaped building surrounding a lovely, paved and landscaped courtyard. Weather permitting, community members gather here for special social events and weekly summer cookouts. The barbecues are a nice alternative to indoor dining and always draw a good-sized crowd.

July 31st is the feast day of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, a day important for Jesuits and others. The Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits, was founded by Saint Ignatius in 1540. This statue of Saint Ignatius is located in our first floor parlor. It was originally placed in the rotunda of the Shrine of the North American Martyrs at Auriesville, New York. It was moved to its current location when the Shrine was transferred from Jesuit to lay control. The Jesuits celebrate special liturgies on this day.

This is the cornerstone of Murray-Weigel Hall. As the engraving indicates, our house is over 100 years old. It was built as a printing press for the Sacred Heart Messenger, a Jesuit publication. After publication in the U.S. ceased, the building was converted, first, to a residence for Jesuits in special studies and, then, to a home for Jesuits studying philosophy at Fordham. A small infirmary that was also maintained at the Hall was gradually expanded. Today, the house serves as the healthcare center for the Eastern Province.

Kohlmann Hall, the building neighboring Murray-Weigel, was once home to the Provincial’s office which now operates from 83rd Street in Manhattan. The retired Jesuits currently living in Kohlmann are part of the Murray-Weigel-Kohlmann community.

These buildings may be old, but the hospitality extended by their residents is genuine! You are always welcome to visit!

This is a scene of Jesuits, pushed by volunteers, as they enter Fordham’s. Rose Hill campus. They are headed to the nearby Botanical Gardens. During the school year, many of the fathers are assisted by students. These volunteers share their time and talents, as well as their high energy and excellent social skills. It is wonderful to have young people visit Murray-Weigel and Kohlmann Halls.

This is Kohlmann Hall, one of the two buildings housing our community. It is conveniently located right next to Murray-Weigel Hall. At one time, it was the province house for the former New York Province. That province has since been amalgamated into the Jesuits USA East Province. The building is not wheelchair accessible, having been built in 1922, so able bodied, retired Jesuits reside here.

Just as buds open in the spring, Murray-Weigel Hall has opened its doors. We have had a long “winter” of Covid, spanning several years, but we can now welcome visitors to our Community Masses. They are celebrated daily at 8:00 A.M. and 11:30 A.M. The early Mass is a bit simpler than the later one.

Feel free to meet a Jesuit you know there or introduce yourself to one. Fr. Ray Bucko, who manages this page, would be happy to make your acquaintance! He usually attends the 8 o’clock liturgy and sits in his wheelchair on the left, front side of the chapel.

When visiting, enter the Hall through the Bathgate Avenue entrance. Just inform the receptionist that Fr. Ray has invited you to Mass. Please be sure to wear a mask. Some vestiges of the pandemic years are, necessarily, slow to disappear!

This is our chapel at the Easter season, the time when we especially commemorate Christ's resurrection. The predominant color is white, as reflected by the banners behind the altar. Notice that the Paschal candle is in the front of the chapel, on the left. Normally, it is in the back, brought out only for funerals and for baptisms. White lilies and other fresh flowers adorn the altar. The eight day period from Easter Sunday until the Sunday after Easter, or Divine Mercy Sunday, is referred to as the Octave of Easter. The Easter, or Paschal, Season, lasts 50 days, beginning on Easter Sunday and ending on Pentacost Sunday.

We are now in the penitential season of Lent. The color purple predominates. We confess our sins and do penance in preparation for the season of Easter. The Stations of the Cross are celebrated in our chapel each Friday. We are also able to participate regularly in Eucharistic Adoration, wherein we worship the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ, substantially present in the Eucharist.
