A year ago, rabbis and community leaders from across the United States and Israel flew to YCT for our semiannual Kollel for Psak, a joint training initiative of our Torah Center and Community Network. These men and women are deeply committed to addressing the pressing needs facing the modern Jew and to advancing the halakhic discourse of the Modern Orthodox community.

Here, Rabbanit Shalhevet Cahana shares her experience working with her chevruta, Rabbi Rafael Jonathan Polisuk, on a shaila about halakhic obligations of a deaf person.

Rabbi Rafael Polisuk went on to share his psak this year at the YCT– Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies"Advances in Disabilities Halakha Conference," a full-circle moment demonstrating how learning and collaboration translate into real change in people’s everyday lives.

YCT graduate Rabbi Steven Exler (’09) recently sat down with the JBS Jewish Broadcasting Service and fellow YCT grad Rabbi Justin Pines to reflect on grief and resilience in honor of the holiday. We are sharing the conversation in the hope that it enriches your spiritual practice today and deepens our collective appreciation of the importance of pastoral care in rabbinic training.

For the past seven years, our Israel-based Regel Bakever ("One Foot in the Grave") Tisha B'Av program has brought together thousands across the globe to reflect on mortality and humanity, reviving an important motif of Tisha B'Av.
For the second year in a row, we're holding a dedicated English-language event!
Our featured lecturer this year is Dr. Thomas HĂĽbl, a world-renowned scholar, author, and teacher on intergenerational trauma who is currently a visiting scholar at Harvard University. In particular, HĂĽbl has brought together Germans and Israelis to process the legacy of the Holocaust and, more broadly, leads training groups on the most polarizing contemporary challenges.
This program is brought together by YCT's Israeli program, Livyat Chen, in partnership with Applied Jewish Spirituality and Or HaLev - Center for Jewish Spirituality & Meditation.

What does Tisha B’Av teach us about our responsibilities to one another?
The destruction of Jerusalem was not only the result of failed leadership. It was also the result of individuals who failed to fulfill their communal obligations.
Together, we'll explore the biblical and rabbinic sources behind this idea before taking a deeper look at the legal obligations of the individual to the community, and asking how far "community" extends in the modern age.

Now that it’s summer, we’re looking back at some of this year’s highlights and accomplishments.

This spring, we hosted our semi-annual Herbert Lieberman Memorial Lecture and Award Dinner.
Keynote speaker Rabbi Saul Berman delivered an edifying shiur on the Torah’s unique ethical contribution in the context of the ancient world: the duty not to harm the stranger or animals.
We also celebrated this year’s award recipient, recent YCT graduate Rabbi Daniel Machlis, and honored last year’s recipient, Marko Gasparovic.

Who’s afraid of American Jews? Not this yeshiva! 🇺🇸
In honor of America’s 250th Fourth of July, Rabbi Linzer addresses a common conversation in Orthodox American Jewish circles: the questioning of the value of Jewish life in America. In support of YCT’s American kehillot, Rabbi Linzer writes:
“Living as part of a Jewish majority is a tremendous blessing. But living as a minority in a non-Jewish world carries its own, unique blessings. It compels us to recognize that we live in a world with other peoples and that we have a duty to them as well as to Jews. It forces engagement with modernity’s values — humanism, feminism, universalism, democracy, human rights, autonomy — sparks of holiness that need to find their proper place within Torah and tradition
So, on this July 4th… I celebrate what it means to be an American — proud of the nitzotzot of holiness that we, the Jewish people, have found and elevated in this land of democracy and human rights, bringing them into our lives and our tradition.”

As the day gives way to night, our own light, too, will dim for three weeks, as we mourn what we lost close to two thousand years ago: the Mikdash, the place where the Shekhinah dwelled.

That, perhaps, is our challenge during these weeks…
We mourn the Mikdash that no longer stands before us in space while trying to tend the small sanctuary that still remains in the heart.”

We have come to the end of this year's YCT Gap Year Fellowship, a year of learning, growth, and inspiration.

At YCT, we strive to cultivate a Torah that is intellectually rigorous, spiritually alive, and deeply committed to the Jewish people and the broader world. We believe that serious Torah learning flourishes alongside humility, openness, compassion, and a sense of responsibility.

In a world that gives us reason to worry about the future of the Jewish people, this group of Gap Year Fellows has been a source of hope.

It has been a privilege to learn with them, to be inspired by them, and to glimpse—through them—the future.
