What becomes possible when we walk alongside one another, rather than trying to carry ministry alone?

Across the Northeast, congregations and leaders need relationships rooted in trust, shared learning, and mutual care. The Synod’s Collaboration Pillar is ongoing work toward that kind of connectional ministry: investing WITH presbyteries, not doing ministry FOR them. Through multi-presbytery gatherings, shared resources, shared leadership, storytelling, learning, and collaborative initiatives, we are growing toward sustainable, innovative, vital ministry.

When we learn together, resources can be multiplied and new forms of ministry can emerge: strengthening congregations, presbyteries, and the wider Church. As we prepare to gather at Arumdaun Presbyterian Church in Bethpage, NY, we remember: The Church Alongside means we walk together.

Connectional ministry is not about consolidation; it is about accompaniment.

Congregations, presbyteries, and ministry leaders are strengthened when they have room to share wisdom, name challenges, and discern faithfully with others. The Synod’s Collaboration Pillar is growing into this work by investing WITH presbyteries rather than doing ministry FOR them. Its developing strategies include multi-presbytery gatherings, relationship-building, shared leadership and resourcing, including joint staffing where appropriate, storytelling and shared learning, collaborative grant initiatives, and training in organizational models, mediation, and conflict transformation.

The hope is not uniformity, but greater sustainability, innovation, and vitality: stronger bonds across mid councils, stronger congregations, and a more inclusive, mission-oriented Church. When we walk alongside one another, God can open new possibilities for ministry that no community must pursue alone.

What happens when a young person’s questions are met with patience, courage, and a listening church?

Youth and young adults discern faith, purpose, and calling amid seasons of transition. They need mentors, congregations, and presbyteries willing to walk alongside them, not only with answers, but with presence, encouragement, and room to lead.

The Synod’s Youth & Young Adult Leadership Development Grants support ministry through mentoring, service projects, retreats, mission, small groups, camp, and ordinary moments of listening. Through this ministry, young people are nurtured as faithful leaders for the Church of today and tomorrow.

Gifts, including General Giving for Areas of Greatest Need, help sustain this work of discipleship and leadership development, strengthening the wider Body of Christ across the Northeast. Where is God at work? In every relationship where grace makes room to grow.

What does it mean to walk with one another in faith, rather than doing things for one another?

In seasons of change, conflict, and new beginnings, leaders and congregations need companionship, wise discernment, and space for grace. No one is meant to walk alone.

We are growing this practice through the Coaching Network, offering professional support for leaders navigating change; the Mediation Network, where conflict may become an opening for grace-filled restoration; Commissioned Ruling Elder and Commissioned Pastor cohorts; and the Small Church Residency Pilot Program, a two-year designated pastor program that invests in the vitality of hard-to-call congregations. Through the Grant Mentorship Initiative, veteran grantees also walk alongside new grantees in shared learning and ministry.

Together, these relationships help make courageous, sustainable, gospel-rooted ministry more possible across the Northeast. This work is ongoing: we are still growing into the Church Alongside.

What begins in a living room, over a shared meal, or in a small circle of prayer may become a new expression of Christ’s love.

Across the Northeast, faithful people are discerning, gathering, and planting new communities of faith. Many neighbors long for belonging and a place to encounter the gospel beyond an established congregation, and new communities often need patient care as they take root.

The Synod’s Emerging Gospel Community Grants support these leaders and communities as they form relationships, worship, serve their neighborhoods, and grow toward sustainability without being rushed.

As these new expressions emerge, the wider Church is strengthened through fresh vitality and diverse ways of being the Body of Christ. Here, God is at work in communities of courage, compassion, and creativity.

What happens when generosity makes room for what God is already stirring in our neighborhoods?

Across the Northeast, congregations and leaders are seeking faithful ways to nurture belonging, meet community needs, and welcome one another across generations. Innovation Grants support new ministry for the sake of our neighborhoods.

One verified example, “Cook and Eat,” gathers people around food and fellowship: nurturing culture, belonging, intergenerational connection, food security, youth engagement, hospitality, and missional identity. It is a reminder that ministry can grow around a shared table, where every person has a place.

Through this generosity, congregations are given room to listen, experiment, and strengthen the wider Church through ministries rooted in relationship and care. God is at work wherever welcome becomes tangible and community begins to flourish.

What if a campus became a place where students could bring their whole selves, and discover they are not alone?

Across the Northeast, students are asking big questions about identity, faith, purpose, and calling, often far from home. Campus pastors, chaplains, and ministry communities meet them with welcome, pastoral care, honest faith exploration, and patient presence.

Campus Ministry Grants help sustain this ministry in dorm rooms, dining halls, campus chapels, and late-night conversations, where God is already at work. Together, we make room for belonging and vocational discernment, helping students listen for God’s call.

This ministry strengthens the wider Church by connecting congregations and presbyteries beyond their own sanctuary doors, nurturing disciples and leaders for the Church of today and tomorrow.

What can grow when a church plants warmth beyond its doors?

In rural Mayfield, many students walk to school. On cold days, a warm hat, scarf, pair of gloves, or socks can make a real difference.

In November 2025, Mayfield Central Presbyterian Church planted a Community Sharing Tree. Neighbors could give or receive winter items, protected in ziplock bags. It was refilled more than five times, and many gifts came from people beyond the congregation.

More than 200 families were touched, both those who received and those who gave. “This has been a wonderful mission for our community, allowing us to reach out to those we may not see inside our doors.”

This is The Church Beyond: sent beyond the sanctuary doors, where shared compassion strengthens the wider Church.

What happens when a congregation turns a simple act of care into a shared ministry with the wider community?

In Mayfield, New York, many students walk to school in a rural community where winter weather can make basic necessities urgent. Mayfield Central Presbyterian Church responded by “planting” a Community Sharing Tree in November 2025, offering hats, gloves, scarves, and socks for neighbors to give or receive.

With 16 items per side, 32 at a time, kept dry in ziplock bags, the tree was refilled more than five times. Many donations came from people who were not church members. The ministry touched more than 200 families, including givers and recipients, while helping the congregation build vitality by connecting beyond its walls.

As one participant said, “This has been a wonderful mission for our community, allowing us to reach out to those we may not see inside our doors.”

This is The Church Beyond: we are sent beyond the sanctuary doors to meet immediate need with dignity and compassion.
