Monday, September 7 — Words That Give Direction

Read: James 3:1–5; Proverbs 16:23–24

James compares the tongue to a bit in a horse’s mouth and a rudder on a ship. Both are small, yet they help determine direction. Our words can do the same.

A sentence of encouragement may give someone courage to keep going. A careless criticism may remain with someone for years.

We rarely know how far the influence of our words will travel.

Today, pay attention not only to what you say, but to the direction your words are helping others move.

Reflection Questions

• Whose words have helped guide or encourage me?
• What direction do my words tend to take the people closest to me?
• Who might need a word of encouragement from me today?

Family Application

At supper, have each person name something encouraging someone once said to them. Then intentionally speak one encouraging sentence to each family member.

Family Discussion Question:
How can a few words change the direction of someone’s day?

Do my words sound like they belong to Jesus?

This week in GPS: Grow • Pray • Study, we continue A Faith That Works: Living What We Believe.

In Sunday’s message, “The Power of Our Words,” James reminds us that something as small as the tongue can have enormous influence. Our words can direct, destroy, bless, encourage….. or wound.

Because our speech flows from the heart, a faith that changes our hearts must eventually change our words. By His grace, God continues changing our hearts so that our words increasingly reflect Jesus.

This week, we’ll be asking one important question:

Do my words sound like they belong to Jesus?

Each morning at 7:00 a.m., GPS gives us Scripture to read, questions to consider, prayer, and ways families can grow together.

Join us tomorrow morning as we begin.

WHERE DID YOUR FAITH BECOME VISIBLE THIS WEEK?

Saturday, September 5 — Where Is My Faith Becoming Visible?

Read: James 2:14–26; Matthew 5:14–16

As you prepare for worship tomorrow, return to this week’s question: Where is my faith becoming visible?

Living faith often appears in ordinary moments when we forgive, encourage, serve, give, help a neighbor, or choose God’s way when another way would be easier.

These actions allow others to see the grace of Jesus at work in us.

Ask the Holy Spirit today: “Lord, because You have loved me, how are You calling me to live?” Then trust Him enough to take the next step.

Reflection Questions
• Where did my faith become visible through my actions this week?
• Where did I sense God asking me to act but hesitate?
• What is one next step of faithful obedience God may be placing before me?

Family Application
Have each family member share one way they tried to put their faith into action this week. Then choose one way your whole family can serve or encourage someone together.

Family Discussion Question: What could our family do that would help someone else see the love of Jesus?
