We are Christ’s disciples, an open community of worship, nurture and service. We journey together, seeking God’s guidance and grace for life and mission both near and far. We welcome all God’s children though differing in race, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, ethnicity, marital status, physical or mental ability, political stance or theological perspective, and we affirm the faith, baptism and spiritual gifts of all Christians celebrating that all people are part of God’s good creation.

Tonight, First Christian Church is honored to host DOVE’s 26th Annual Candle Lighting Ceremony.

This gathering is an opportunity to remember lives lost to domestic violence, stand alongside survivors, and recognize that awareness alone is not enough.

This year’s theme, Moving From Awareness to Action, reminds us that creating safer communities requires more than good intentions. It requires compassion, courage, and a willingness to speak up and act.

We are grateful to open our doors for this important gathering. Being a church for all people means being a place where difficult realities are acknowledged, every person’s dignity is affirmed, and our community can come together in hope.

This week, as our nation marked 25 years since the September 11 attacks, some kind folks from First Christian Church prepared and delivered care packages to first responders throughout Moultrie County.

September 11 is a day to remember the lives that were lost, the families forever changed, and the courage of those who ran toward danger to help others. It is also an opportunity to express our gratitude for the first responders in our own communities who continue that work every day.

We are grateful for the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMTs, dispatchers, and others who serve our neighbors, often in difficult circumstances and at all hours of the day and night.

The care packages were a small gesture, but we hope they carried a simple message: we see you, we appreciate you, and we are grateful for your service to our community.

A little over a week ago, we reflected on one of Jesus’ most familiar parables, the Good Samaritan, alongside his words in Matthew 25, where he reminds us that when we welcome the stranger and care for those in need, we encounter Christ himself.

That message was inspired in part by the remarkable true story behind Come From Away, which is currently playing at The Little Theatre on the Square. While the musical tells the story of a small town’s extraordinary hospitality following September 11, the sermon asks a timeless question: How might we become neighbors in our own community?

If you missed the message, or would like to revisit it, you can watch it anytime on our YouTube channel.

And if you haven’t yet experienced Come From Away, there’s still time. It’s a moving production that reminds us how ordinary acts of kindness can have extraordinary impact. We’re grateful to partner with The Little Theatre on the Square in encouraging our community to not just enjoy the story, but to continue it through acts of generosity and hospitality.
