A Jesuit priest, lawyer, social worker, and writer, most knew St. Alberto simply as “Padre Hurtado.” Though a brilliant scholar, St. Alberto is remembered most for his avid care for the poor, founding shelters for abandoned children, often being seen patrolling the streets of his community in his truck, looking for those most in need.

He is remembered as a national hero in Chile, with some even calling him a founding father. Today, we join the Church in celebrating our brother’s feast day and his profound witness of love and compassion.

In 1534, St. Ignatius and his first companions professed their first vows on the Feast of the Assumption. Today, we honor Our Lady, Mother of the Society of Jesus and ask that she continue to intercede on our behalf on this solemnity

Reading about the life of St. Dominic was pivotal to the conversion of St. Ignatius of Loyola. It was out of a desire to imitate the faith, poverty, and service of St. Dominic and St. Francis that Ignatius gave his life to Christ and eventually went on to found the Society of Jesus.

Today, we join the Church in celebrating the Feast of St. Dominic, founder of the Order of Preachers. We pray in gratitude for the life of St. Dominic, the witness of him and his brothers, and for an increase in vocations to the Dominicans.

81 years ago, today, the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan where Fr. Pedro Arrupe, SJ served as master of novices.

Turning the novitiate into a makeshift field hospital, Fr. Arrupe and the Jesuit novices began to care for those wounded by the bomb and treat those suffering from radiation poisoning.

St. Ignatius of Loyola begins the Spiritual Exercises with a profoundly simple claim: that every person is created with purpose, and that that purpose ought to order everything else.

Ignatius believed that in order to praise and serve God, we must grow in indifference. The indifference Ignatius calls us to is neither apathetic nor resigned, but a spirit of true, interior freedom.

It is in being indifferent to riches, honor, and even health, that we are better able to recognize God’s presence in our lives and give glory to Him no matter our circumstances.

It was in this spirit that Ignatius founded the Society of Jesus, and it is in the same spirit that we continue his legacy and work “for the greater glory of God.”
