One of the hardest lines in the Litany of Humility is:

"That others may be esteemed more than I."

At first, it sounds unfair. Why should someone else receive the recognition? Why should their gifts be noticed while mine remain hidden?

But St Francis discovered a deeper truth: the need to be esteemed often reveals a heart that is still looking for its worth in the eyes of others.

When another person is praised, promoted, appreciated, or celebrated, our hidden attachments come to the surface. Envy whispers, "What about me?" Pride asks, "Why not me?"

Yet love rejoices when good is seen and honoured in another.

St Francis could celebrate the gifts of his brothers because he knew that his dignity came from being a beloved son of God, not from being the most admired man in the room.

The truly humble person does not become smaller. They become secure enough to let others shine.

A soul rooted in Christ does not compete for attention. It delights in goodness wherever it appears.

The moment you can sincerely rejoice when someone else is esteemed more than you, a chain breaks. You are no longer living for applause. You are living for love.

A Franciscan Practice:

🔹️ Thank God for the gifts you see in others
🔹️ Speak well of someone when they are not present.
🔹️ When overlooked, offer the moment to Christ without resentment.
🔹️ Remember: what is done for God is never unseen.

O Jesus, meek and humble of heart, hear me. That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. + Litany of Humility
