Family worship is the regular and intentional practice of a family to meet together to read God’s Word, sing His praises, and pray.
Every family has plenty of good things competing for our time and attention. With all the other things demanding our time, why add one more? Isn’t going to church together enough?
Here’s one good reason I found for why we should do family worship: God’s clear command in Scripture.
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise” (Deuteronomy 6:5-7).
He has equipped you for every good work (Ephesians 2:10, 2 Corinthians 9:8), through the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17), by His grace and the power of the Holy Spirit (Hebrews 13:20-21), so that you will bear fruit (Colossians 1:10). Meditate on those verses if you are like me and wrestle with feelings of inadequacy and of not having “enough time.”
Don’t overthink it, don’t create an outline or 10-step process. Just take a step forward: Talk to your spouse, talk to your kids and read, sing, and pray with your family today.
Pray with and for your family, beyond just the normal mealtime and bedtime prayers. Then add reading Scripture together. Start with the Proverbs, Psalms or the Gospels. Then sing a song together! Can’t carry a tune or play an instrument? Neither can I. You’re worshipping the Lord; just raise a joyful noise together!
If your efforts are met with blank stares, or even annoyance and resistance…that’s ok. Just be faithful, be consistent, honor the Lord by doing what is right. He is the one who does all the work anyway; we’re just called to faithfully plant that seed (1 Corinthians 3:6).
