During our August “Cultivate” series, our members were encouraged to think about what they longed for in our church and our surrounding community, and what they could do to make those sacred yearnings possible.

One of our members realized that she longs for a church where kids are excited to participate in worship, and she got to work right away to build up a children’s junior choir. They sang their first song this week, “Jesus Loves Me,” and led our congregation in singing this classic tune.

We love to see the Holy Spirit calling and people being willing and ready to say yes!

What do you long for? In his letter to the Ephesian Church, Paul prays for the Church to be full of discernment, or wisdom to do what God desires them to do. This prayer isn't only for the ancient church: it's for us, too.

As kids in South Bend schools return to the classroom today, we pray this blessing:

Today we pray for these students as they begin a new school year. Be with them in their classrooms, on the playground, in the hallways, and wherever they go.

Give them curious minds, open hearts, and kind spirits. Help them be good friends, include others, and show your love through their words and actions.

We pray, too, for their teachers, school staff, and administrators. Give them patience, wisdom, strength, and joy. Help them create schools where every child feels safe, welcomed, and loved.

Bless these children and all who care for them. Watch over them, guide them, and help them grow throughout this year. And may they always remember: they are loved by you, and they are loved by us. Amen.

The apostle Paul knew that, fundamentally, a growing church is made up of growing Christians, people who are committed in growing in their love for each other and sharing God’s love with others.
