“The Courage to Face the Unknown” – Nehemiah 2:1-8
Life is filled with risks. Sometimes the risks are minimal – often considered minimal because of manageable consequences. However, the greater potential of consequence is often tied to a sense of greater risk. Some of us live life embracing risk. Some of us are risk-averse. Whatever our tactic with risk, courage is often summoned in the face of risk. The root for “courage” is the Latin “cor”, which is the word for heart. Often courage is understood as a heart issue – an inner strength to speak and do with honestly, openness, and yes, risk, often in the face of not knowing the outcome. Nehemiah stepped into the king’s presence with a full heart – full of grief for his people but also full of faith in the God of promises. This week we take a close look at Nehemiah’s courage in the king’s presence and we will also be invited to look in the mirror of our own hearts to see what courage there is in us for the things God has before us. Let us take up the call to be full of “heart” for each day – knowing we can trust God in all things!

The Essential Posture of Humility
Prayer Happenings
New ventures stir many emotions—excitement, possibility, adventure, and also anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. While serving in exile, Nehemiah learned that although the temple had been rebuilt, Jerusalem was still vulnerable. For all its splendor, the temple remained exposed without the protection of the city walls, a painful reminder of the destruction that had led God’s people into exile. In the opening chapter, Nehemiah weeps over this reality. Yet before taking action, he humbles himself before God and acknowledges that this vulnerability is tied to the people’s own sin. His example reminds us that no matter how worthy the task, the best place to begin is on our knees, surrendering our plans and priorities to God. In that humility, Nehemiah also sees that God has positioned him to move forward and make a difference. As we begin our own building project at First, may we start with the same humility— humble and grateful for the way God uses our past and present to prepare us for the future as we lay new foundations for generations to come.

A staple of the exterior of our current sanctuary was carefully removed this week in preparation for construction. Thank you to the good folks at Gil Haugen Construction for carefully removing the steeple this week.
