The Bible is not just something we read. Both Ezekiel and John were told to eat the scroll. The scriptures are good for us to devour. They are meant to nourish us.

Some people prefer eating one big meal a day and some prefer eating multiple meals throughout the day. But if we are to grow properly, be healthy and active, then we must take in the proper amount for the amount of activity.

Some people prefer a variety of food. You might read many scriptures and take in commentaries and teachings. Some like to stick to the same things, Bible only and a few scriptures. The Israelites were simply told to take the manna they needed to eat for the day.

But here’s the thing about eating. A banana doesn’t do me any good by simply looking at it. It doesn’t even do good by me touching it. I must eat it. I must let it get in. And it takes time for me to digest it. So many people rush through their eating of the Word of the Lord. They don’t let it digest until it becomes a part of them.

And once it is digesting, we must put it to use or we get spiritually fat.

A last word, both Ezekiel and John are told to eat the scroll and that it will taste good in their mouth but turn sour in their stomach. This can often be true for us as we read the scriptures. They feel so good to read or even say, but carrying it out can feel hard. It changes us. And others may not like seeing the change in us even though we know it is good.

But we must eat. We must let it digest. The saying is, “You are what you eat.” So what are you eating?

IF YOU AREN’T GETTING MUCH OUT OF THE SCRIPTURES…

Perhaps you’re speeding through them out of duty.

Perhaps you’re looking for a few answers so you can get back to “real life.”

But what if the Scriptures aren’t meant to be something you get through?

What if they are an invitation to know Jesus—and to realize that knowing Him is real life?

The Bible is no ordinary book.

It is mysterious. It is the revealing of the invisible God to those who truly desire to know Him, and yet it can remain concealed to those who approach it with ulterior motives.

It can only truly be read with the Holy Spirit.

To read Scripture this way is to commune with the living God.

No other book can make that claim.

The Scriptures divide soul and spirit, joint and marrow. They discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart. They train and equip the servant of God for every good work.

So don’t just read the Bible.

Let yourself be drawn into it.

Slow down. Linger. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal Jesus.

Become infatuated with Him.

Every Scripture is Spirit-breathed and prophetic, ultimately testifying to the heart of Jesus Christ.

Don’t rush through the Word trying to get something from it.

Come to the Word to know Someone.

And in knowing Him, you will find life.

Fires and Amplifiers!

Fires are awesome! A big bonfire is exciting! It lights up the night and is an awesome place for community. Smaller fires can be cozy and warming and create a great place for bonding. But when they get too small, keeping a fire going can be taxing.

Likewise, guitar amplifiers are made to be used at high capacity. It’s not just that they are softer when you turn them down, you don’t get the same quality. For tube amps, eventually they can get too hot and you need to turn them off, just like you gotta have a Sabbath.

I want to propose something to you. If life isn’t really where you want it to be, if you’re feeling tired, quite possibly you aren’t living at high enough capacity. As a worship leader, it can be easy for me to fall into the thoughts of just picking songs for Sunday, running the rehearsal, and playing for the service, but that’s not exciting to me (frankly, it’s not exciting to anybody else either).

But when I work at higher capacity, make my job or service to others be done in a way that excites me, it probably brings out my joy in doing it. Then it creates joy in others when I serve them and they pick up part of what I am giving off so they live at higher capacity. It not only makes me feel better, it makes them feel better, and investing in what I’m doing shows that I’m investing in service to others. And quite frankly, that is also the place where people want to keep seeing you work at higher capacity, so they are more likely to hire you, support you, tell people about you. It’s the way it’s supposed to work.

You can view it as extra work, but the truth is there is a spot where putting in the extra work actually makes it easier. Try hopping up and down for 30 seconds where you’re just jumping about once per second (jump, stop, jump, stop...). Then try hopping up and down for 30 seconds like you’re jumping rope. The second is doing more but yet it seems easier to keep going because you don’t have to restart the motion. It just keeps carrying itself.

We don’t just need this in our personal lives. We need this communally. We need to be fueling and fanning each other’s fires until there are big and bright. That’s where people see the glory of God among us as a community. And quite frankly, when all of our fires are too small to do much good, they actually feel like a big hassle to keep going.

Keep the fires burning and the amplifiers cranked...to 11. 😉
